Hey HN. This is a weekend project of mine. It's an idea I had after seeing so many comments here about the lack of available .com names for startups. As PG once said: "Take a luxury and make it into a commodity"[1]. So, I decided I'd try turning name consulting from something only large corporations could afford to something anyone could. I hope you'll take me up on it :) If you'd like to see a few examples of my work, just check out the links in the footer. Thanks for your attention. [1] http://www.paulgraham.com/ideas.html

I blew off a bunch of "serious" side work last month and built a tiny little embeddable editing tool that I've wanted to have for Ars Technica since, well, the beginning of internet time. It lets any random user make edit suggestions for writers/editors to consider and act on. I think it's pretty cool and it's gotten some good use over the last few weeks. Of note, it's uses a single-field signup form. Edit administration is currently email based, so all it needs is an email address to get people going. I'm sure I'm not the only person to ever do this, but I basically just turned it on one…

Ever wanted to track who unfollowed you last month? Or who followed your competitor last month? Or how your social graph is growing over time? SocialGrapple does this. I've been working on SocialGrapple for a few months (since stepping down from imoveyou.com, YC2010S), this week I got the core product to the point where I'm proud of it so I want to show it off: http://socialgrapple.com/ I wrote up a blog post with some screenshots that will get you an idea of what SocialGrapple looks like: "SocialGrapple snapshot: @limedaring's social graph growth after her HackerNews publicity"…

TLDR: The beta of my my site, Sparkmuse, has begun. Please join me at http://www.sparkmuse.com/invitation/Hacker-News . The Story: Well here it is, the beta of Sparkmuse. I'm pretty happy to "get there", but I'm really just relieved. Don't get me wrong, I'm F'ING STOKED to get this in front of some more valuable eyeballs, especially the Hacker News crowd. Right now though, I'm just leaning back in a rickety old chair thinking "I did it." Several months ago I was pretty down on myself. I wanted to get out there and meet new people, do cool projects, explore new technologies, and just jump…

So a while ago I was thinking it would be neat to build a site that had the most absolute utility. The idea I came up with was a site to store those little protips that are super useful, if you know them ahead of time. I hired a guy to work on it with me, and ClueDB was born: http://cluedb.com/ Please give it a whirl (it uses Twitter auth as login but doesn't tweet anything) and tell me what you think! (Various trivia: My first try at a project coded by someone else and "product managed" by me. Runs on Flask + MongoDB. Also, this is totally unrelated to my startup.)

http://goalfinch.com I had the idea for Goalfinch while reading an article here on Hacker News about economic incentives and how effective they are. It got me thinking: What if there were an easy way to set up economic incentives for the goals I have in my own life? A few months later, after working on it off and on in my spare hours, it's ready for prime time. With Goalfinch, you define a goal and make a contribution of cash that acts as an incentive for you to complete the goal. Your Facebook friends confirm whether or not you've accomplished it. If you succeed before your deadline, you…

Hello HN, meet Receivd. Receivd is our solution to the problem of sharing files securely and easily with your family, friends and coworkers. http://receivd.com/early-access With the desktop and web app, you can create lists of people, then drag and drop files to share instantly. You can also send files to just one person. On top of that, you can even send files to people when they're offline. It's standards-based and powerful enough that you can send files in the gigabyte range with ease. Any photos or videos you transfer will not be touched up, delivered just the way you sent them. Please…

It seems like there isn't a week that goes by where there isn't a post on Hacker News asking "where can I find coverage for my startup?" So, I decided to make something to finally help address part of this problem. I'm happy to announce the launch of StartShout (http://startshout.com) today - a new way to find sources of coverage for your news about events, startup launches, new features, or other announcements. StartShout is both a directory of content publishers and a pitch writing service. I made StartShout because I want to help hackers get their projects noticed, but I think it could be…

@glasner and I shipped a product today, http://www.tweetgrabber.com, that allows anyone with an Instapaper account to receive full-length articles that were favorited by anyone with a public Twitter account. You can now essentially crowdsource your Instapaper reading to those you trust by following their favorites. We use Twitter's streaming API to send articles straight to your Instapaper. You can follow your own favorites (single player mode) or follow anyone else's (multiplayer mode), forming a graph of curated real-time news.

I built HackerBuddy.com with the idea of helping the Hacker News community get one-on-one help with fellow hackers that know their stuff. It matches up people that are good at a particular skill (Ruby on Rails, Python, beta-testing, general startup advice etc) with people that need that specialist help. All it does is swap your email address so that hackers can give fellow hackers one-on-one advice. I built the site as a way to learn Ruby on Rails, I'm still a bit green when it comes to coding so there's a very good chance that the server will fall over. Any feedback you guys have would be…

A few weeks ago I got an idea for a more interesting interface to check the stock market. The huge list of symbols in a table view that are either green or red (the same red and green whatever the gain is 0.1% or 10%) is not really cool for fast scanning, nor fun to use. Since I happen to be involved with an iPhone and iPad devleopment company here in Sicily since a few years, as share holder and "advisor", I suggested the idea to this friends of mine. As there was no really development bandwidth to do things like this, as they mostly work for other companies creating applications for the…

A minimal "@ moving around a hardcoded map" implemented in a bunch of languages, some by me and some contributed by others. A slightly more interesting riff on the Hello World or 99 Bottles of Beer theme. More languages or improvements on existing ones would be nice :) There's a github repo at: https://github.com/nrkn/SimpleRL

Long time lurker, short time member. A few weeks ago I released my new Android app, SemiSilent, which allows you to whitelist contacts so that they ring your phone even when it's on silent mode. I've found it useful when on call or when my wife is working hours that I'm sleeping. I've already released a few updates, and I'm working on adding a few more based on feedback I've gotten. I'd appreciate any feedback you'd have, whether it's feature requests, criticisms, thoughts on how to market, or any other wisdom you'd care to share. My site with information:…

Hey Everyone, So this was a weekend project that I did basically as a favor to a friend of mine who is a writer. This friend wanted a simple way to publish his short stories on the web that gave him a short url for tweeting and had no associated branding with the published work. Essentially this is what I have done here with publ.ca . My question is that I want to know where I should take this project in terms of features. Possible extensions to this project are: - automatic tweeting when publishing - custom layouts and designs - markdown rendering - user accounts ( FB connect or Google…

We hatched this idea of a Kickstarter + Groupon + Etsy model last week, threw up a super simple landing page that day, then launched a more detailed landing page last night. What do you think of the idea as a whole? The landing page itself? Since the Etsy / crafting world is so large and diverse, we're really trying to focus on the sharing of our site to get the word out. We are doing some minimal google ads and will be doing various tests to see what brings in the best traffic and converts the best. Interestingly enough, good old fashioned twitter searching with hand authored tweets has had…

HN, I would appreciate some feedback on my first coding project ever. It's a visual instant search for iTunes (using Apple's API) I consider it MVP at this point, some features are still missing. I've tested the site in Safari, IE, and Firefox, and it seems to work in all of them. http://38069.vs.webtropia.com/tester/test/ (not too fancy of a URL) My background is nowhere near coding or designing (English major in the making, quite sure my code shows) and I only knew some basic PHP going into this last week, so don't be too harsh. Why this idea? I strongly believe visual search will be…

I did this project to allow people to share their custom designs for websites. In addition, it is integrated with my earlier project, called Stylebot, which was a Google Chrome extension that allows users to customize site designs and save them persistently (http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1716889) You can browse styles contributed by other users and bookmark them for later use. You can install these styles as part of Stylebot or as userscripts. I will love to get feedback and ideas on its implementation, UI and ease of use. Don't forget to check out the styles for Hacker News! URL is:…

http://www.jobmailr.com/ Most of the valuable hires out there already have jobs and aren't actively looking for another. But would they be interested in getting relevant jobs emailed to them once a week or so, so that they were sure to hear about that dream position opening up? And would companies pay to access their inboxes? Asking myself, I found it valuable. Seeing if others do too is what jobmailr.com is trying to find out. If several hundred people sign up, there's an instant audience that employers can pay to access. If it doesn't gain traction amongst the would-be hires, then I'm just…

Many years ago (2007?) I put together this site: http://www.tripzard.com . I never launched it, because it was basically a MVP/POC so it's not very refined, but I just found it again today and was surprised it still kind of works decent. The idea was kind of like "Find Your Spot" where you answer a bunch of questions about what you like to do when you travel, and it calculates where the best places for your to travel would be. Most people I found don't realize there are some interesting options out there instead of just going to Cancun. What does the HN community think, is this a project…

I've spent around a year building a Facebook, Twitter, MySpace & LinkedIn iPhone app, which aside from the API hell, has been a pretty fun experience! I think it's turned out really nice. It's been a technical challenge to sync not only a single address book, but also your address books on all the social networks, but in hindsight, I'd do it all again. I'd love to know what HN think's of it, the app URL is: http://itunes.apple.com/app/friends-plus-facebook-twitter/id407846513?mt=8&ls=1 Here are some promo codes, not sure how long they will last: WPTA4M99L3YF MR39LWPTKNYT ME346Y3TPNY9…
