In plain words
This is a C library implementation that provides optimized versions of the strlen() function, claiming performance improvements of 2x to 4x faster execution compared to standard implementations. It is designed for C developers working on performance-critical applications where string length calculation is a bottleneck. The optimization appears to focus on algorithmic improvements to a fundamental string operation commonly used in systems programming.

StringZilla v3 with C++, Rust, and Swift bindings, and AVX-512 and NEON2024 · github.com · ▲15Hi HN! I've spent the last few weeks optimizing the string operations in StringZilla. You'd be surprised how much performance GLibc and the Standard Templates Library of C++ are leaving on the table, especially on Arm and, likely, on RISC-V. I've significantly increased the number of implemented algorithms for different workloads. Searching across English texts on Arm, for example: - is 4.4x faster than STL, - and 16.8x faster in reverse order. The new version of the library now includes a C++ binding largely compatible with the C++ Standard, featuring all 17 overloads of the `replace`…

Faking SIMD to Search and Sort Strings 5x Faster2023 · ashvardanian.com · ▲29I want to share a really dumb, but very practical project I have packaged this summer, to perform operations on strings much faster. I was using Python to work with a multi-terabyte newline-delimited file. Reading, splitting, and shuffling it was a nightmare. So, I wrapped a trivial hardware-friendly heuristic I've been using for the last few years into a CPython library. The part I enjoyed the most is implementing SIMD behavior without SIMD instructions... Using 64-bit words to work at 8-bit granularity. Unlike conventional SIMD, the code would remain the same for ~~almost~~ any hardware.…

Talanoa▲346Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…

I saw this [0] pretty cool thread by user revskill, and wanted a quicker way to search through it, but also to keep them all in one place so I can read them at my leisure whenever I get time. Right now is like 60 lines of Ruby using Nokogiri, but I will certainly look into it further down the line and improve the list. There's a cronjob checking the thread every 12 hours but I will eventually shut that down and it will become static after that. There are some really awesome blogs in there. I really recommend going through the list, it made my day. [0] "Could you share your personal blog…
