A geofence-based social network app 6 years in development
My name is Adrian. I'm a Software Engineer and I spent 6 years developing a perimeter-based geofence-based social media app. What it does: - Allows you to load a custom perimeter anywhere on the geographic map (180° E and W longitude and 90° N and S latitude), to cover area any area of interest - Chat rooms get loaded within the perimeter - You can chat with people within the perimeter I developed a mobile app that uses an advanced geofence-based networking system from 2013 to 2019. My goal was to connect users within polygon geofences anywhere in the world. The app is capable of loading…

In plain words
This mobile app allows users to draw custom geographic perimeters anywhere on a map and access location-based chat rooms with others within those boundaries. Developed over six years, the app uses geofence technology to connect people in specific areas of interest. It is designed for users seeking location-based social interaction, such as neighbors, event attendees, or community members in defined regions worldwide.

Geofenced chat communities anyone can createNov 2025 · vicinity.social · ▲57Hi HN, I built a location-based chatroom with Discord-like servers. This started as a portfolio project to learn WebSockets but has spiraled into something else entirely. There are two features right now: Drop - Single chatrooms that can only be seen within a specified radius and only last for a time less than 48 hours chosen by the user. Hubs - Geofenced servers modeled after Discord. These are not time restricted. They can be created by anyone and the creator becomes the admin able to add channels and set rules. When a user enters the location’s area, they can join the hub and continue…

Hi folks! I'm excited to show you gis.chat, a geospatial chat platform in both senses: a platform about geospatial topics and a geospatial platform itself, referencing the location of our communities. The setup is fairly simple and reproducible: a plain Zulip instance and a homepage with geospatial search capabilities. It seems almost trivial but it has some very nice features. I guess you should be familiar with Zulips stream/topic model to follow along (https://zulip.com/help/streams-and-topics). The core idea is that there are city-specific streams (currently…

Hey HN! I wanted to share something I built over the last few weeks: isometric.nyc is a massive isometric pixel art map of NYC, built with nano banana and coding agents. I didn't write a single line of code. Of course no-code doesn't mean no-engineering. This project took a lot more manual labor than I'd hoped! I wrote a deep dive on the workflow and some thoughts about the future of AI coding and creativity: http://cannoneyed.com/projects/isometric-nyc
