A Git hook that turns your commit title into Japanese poetry

When putting the kids to bed I had some inspiration and wrote a git hook that turns the title of my commit message into a haiku. Because of the Japanese poetry theme, I had to write it in Ruby What do you think?

A Git hook that turns your commit title into Japanese poetry launched on June 30, 2023 with 5 votes, #1,966 of 4,655 launches that month and more than 50% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 3 years on.

What it does

Add ancient Japanese poetry to your commits in a `prepare-commit-msg` hook. Written in the poetic language of Ruby - talltorp/git-haiku

Hi everyone, I built a CLI tool called *diny* that generates Git commit messages directly from your staged changes. - It runs `git diff` and filters out noise like lockfiles, build artifacts, and binaries. - From the cleaned diff it suggests a clear commit message. - You can confirm or refine the message before committing. Key points: - No setup or API keys required. - Lightweight, local-first workflow. - Supports different lengths and styles (short, normal, long; conventional or simple). - Built in Go with Cobra for a familiar CLI experience. Hi HN! I made this app out of necessity: sometimes I'll troll over my laptop all day without moving until lunch break or work is done. No good. So I made git hook to block my git commits if I didn't do some calisthenics. Later, after I noticed it was useful, I decided to open it up for others. It works like this: - Download the iOS or Android app - Install the .git hook - Do daily pushups with the app or else your hooks will fail Pushup form is validated via ARKit/MLKit and the accelerometer and I only use github for authentication. If you find it useful, let me know! Justin

  • Heya HN, I've been working on a reddit-like platform as my primary side project for the last few years. Doing a (very) soft launch today, mainly because I want to use it to encourage discussion of alternatives. How non.io works: 1. Free to browse, paid to interact. 2. Minimum subscription is $2 (though you can choose more). I take $1 to run the servers, everything left gets split evenly between everything you upvote that month. It's a simple model, but I hope it's a better one than the freemium model we've been relying on for the last few years. Fundamentally I feel like any ad-supported…
