A little randomness for the Hacker News front page

A little randomness for the Hacker News front page launched on October 22, 2014 with 10 votes and more than 75% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 12 years on.

In plain words

This project addresses visibility inequality on popularity-driven platforms like Hacker News and Reddit, where established items accumulate attention while new submissions struggle to gain visibility. It proposes incorporating randomness into front-page algorithms to give newer content fair exposure alongside popular items. The tool targets users and platform designers frustrated by "rich get richer" dynamics on aggregation sites, offering an alternative approach to balancing content discovery between trending and undiscovered posts.

I made a little website with a server that collects only HN submissions with > 500 upvotes chronologically. https://hn.moritz.pm/ It's quite simple because I wanted to learn from the project. But I think it's useful, to get a summary of what was important over the last days. The UI is almost identical to the HN frontpage, you can click on the comments to view the thread and on the username to see the profile. The rest of the cards takes you to the submitted URL.
