A year ago I watched The Count of Monte Cristo, got curious about post-revolution France, and wondered which other movies depicted France in the same period. I was disappointed to find no easy way to answer that question - the only information of this kind I could find was scattered on Wikipedia, unstructured and hard to find. What it does
Explore historical movies across time periods and locations with an interactive map.
I watched the Count of Monte Cristo, got curious about the historical backdrop of the movie, and thought it would be cool to learn history through historical movies. I expected to easily find movies depicting specific areas and points in time. A sore disappointment, a lot of tinkering, and a preposterous amount of tokens later, I proudly present to you the Historical Moviemap (petitions for a better name are welcome). The initial dataset of historical movies comes from scraping Wikipedia and Wikidata.
