In plain words

A Short IPv6 Guide for Home IPv4 Admins is an educational resource published on GitHub Gist that introduces IPv6 networking concepts to administrators familiar with IPv4. It targets home network managers and IT professionals transitioning from IPv4 to IPv6 infrastructure. The guide breaks down IPv6 fundamentals in accessible language, making it suitable for those with existing networking knowledge seeking to understand the next-generation internet protocol without overwhelming technical jargon.

From the sources

This guide is for homelab admins who understand IPv4s well but find setting up IPv6 hard or annoying because things work differently. In some ways, managing an IPv6 network can be simpler than IPv4, one just needs to learn some new concepts and discard some old ones. Don’t pick numbers. Because IPv4 space is small, we are used to managing them, thinking about them, memorizing them. So we pick numbers like 1, 10, 20, 101, etc. However, IPv6 address space is so big, it’s better to let the computers pick the numbers randomly from the large address space, and not limit yourself to small numbers. Use DNS, so you can remember names and not numbers. Therefore, never pick your own numbers! This is…from gist.github.com

Hey all, wanted to share my recent weekend hack project. I wanted to improve upon the existing space for looking up information about IP addresses and ASNs. The backend is written in Rust and pulls BGP data every 8 hours from the RIPE RIS project to build up a routing table and also adds geolocation information. The frontend is using React and Tailwind. Would love any feedback or suggestions on what to improve.

Looking to get some feedback from the Hacker News community. I wrote the book with a focus on penetration testers and red teamers, but there are great examples for network admins, developers, and blue team defenders as well. You can pick up a copy for free here through May 19, 2019: https://gumroad.com/l/the_cyber_plumbers_handbook/hackernews... Please note, because it's hosted on Gumroad, it does require an email. If you don't want to give out your actual email, check out an anonymous email service. I give it away to students for free, so if you know of one that…

Hi HN, For the past few months, I've been exploring tools that integrate with the Linux networking stack. This led me to build SafeHaven, a lightweight and configurable VPN implementation written in Go. The goal was to better understand how virtual private networks work at a fundamental level. Would love feedback from the community! Repo link: https://github.com/kwakubiney/safehaven

Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…
