A Sign In Space – simulating a message from ET

Over the past few months I had the privilege to be part of a team of artists and researchers who assembled a hypothetical message from ET for A Sign in Space, a project founded and directed by media artist Daniela de Paulis. The message was loaded on the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter, a spacecraft orbiting Mars. On May 24th it was beamed back to Earth and received by several radio telescopes during a live performance. Since then, a community of people from all walks of life has been attempting to make sense of the message. If you enjoy the challenge, join the discord channel…

In plain words

A Sign In Space is an art and research project that created a hypothetical extraterrestrial message, loaded it onto the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter spacecraft, and beamed it back to Earth via radio telescopes in a live performance on May 24th. The project invites anyone interested in cryptography, linguistics, and space to attempt decoding the message as part of a collaborative community effort. It combines art, science, and public participation to explore how humanity might interpret contact from beyond Earth.

Just for fun and self education, I've built this over a weekend to teach myself why orbits exist, not just show planets going around. Something that was never clearly explain to me in school. It opens with a guided tour that builds the idea up step by step: two bodies and the equal/opposite force, inertia (the Sun is removed and Earth just drifts straight), then "an orbit is falling and continuously missing," cosmic velocities with a little rocket, Voyager 1 & 2's real gravity assists (the clock runs the actual 1977–1989 dates so the planets orbit into their grand-tour alignment and the…

  • Hi HN, I’m Kashish, one of the co-founders of SpeedVitals, a platform for testing & monitoring website performance with a major emphasis on Core Web Vitals. Until now, our platform has only focused on Synthetic/Lab testing, such as Lighthouse tests and TTFB tests. But now, we have developed a Real-User Monitoring platform that doubles up as a Web Analytics tool. One major feature we have that most RUM tools lack is Performance Audits. Just like Lighthouse audits work on Lab test data, our audits work across all the real-user visits and gives suggestions on what task to prioritize first.…
