A way to manage dotfiles without silly symlinks and special tools

A simple way to manage dotfiles with git without silly symlinks and special tools. Just use negative matches in your .gitignore ! - Git dot files management

A way to manage dotfiles without silly symlinks and special tools launched on April 12, 2016 with 8 votes, #1,937 of 4,301 launches that month and more than 75% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 10 years on.

What it does

One note about profiles , I currently put all the common stuff for my dotfiles into my master branch (eg: a bash alias or function that is useful at both work and home) and the profile-specific stuff on the profile branch. Everytime I update master, I merge it into the profile branches but never the other way round. I should learn more about git worktree though. where my ~/.myconf directory is a git bare repository. Then any file within the home folder can be versioned with normal commands like: been doing this for a good while now, thanks for making thisfrom gist.github.com

Move dotfiles to ~/.config/lnk, get symlinks back, use Git normally. Single binary, no config files, no fluff. Built because chezmoi was too complex and plain Git was too manual.

  • I replaced vector databases with Git for AI memory (PoC)2025 · github.com · ▲198

Hey HN! I built a proof-of-concept for AI memory using Git instead of vector databases. The insight: Git already solved versioned document management. Why are we building complex vector stores when we could just use markdown files with Git's built-in diff/blame/history? How it works: Memories stored as markdown files in a Git repo Each conversation = one commit git diff shows how understanding evolves over time BM25 for search (no embeddings needed) LLMs generate search queries from conversation context Example: Ask "how has my project evolved?" and it uses git diff to show actual…

Dump entire Git repos into a single file for LLM prompts2024 · ▲57

Hey! I wanted to share a tool I've been working on. It's still very early and a work in progress, but I've found it incredibly helpful when working with Claude and OpenAI's models. What it does: I created a Python script that dumps your entire Git repository into a single file. This makes it much easier to use with Large Language Models (LLMs) and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) systems. Key Features: - Respects .gitignore patterns - Generates a tree-like directory structure - Includes file contents for all non-excluded files - Customizable file type filtering Why I find it useful for…

    Gitdot – A better GitHub. Open-source, written in RustJun 2026 · gitdot.io · ▲334

What works now: user signups, org creations, private/public repos, and importing GitHub repositories (both as read-only mirrors and full migrations). So basically, you can create, push and pull to a repo, but we don't have many features quite yet (issues, PRs, CI). What is a bit unique is: 1) we built it in Rust and 2) the website is a little odd. Its design is inspired by CLIs (e.g., fzf, broot, vim) instead of web apps, and as such, lacks some affordances that you might typically expect in favor of keyboard-driven instant navigations (we have the very ambitious goal of an FCP of…
