An interactive tutorial teaching spring physics for animation

Of all the little tips and techniques I've picked up over the years about animation, spring physics remains one of the most powerful and flexible. In this tutorial, we'll learn how to harness their power to build fluid, organic transitions.

What it does

Ever since I started building websites, I've been fascinated by animations. The web is full of creative examples, and whenever I discover a new one, I'm like a dragon hunting for treasure—it becomes imperative that I figure out how it works so I can add it to my collection. Over the past decade, I've amassed quite a metaphorical fortune. 💎💰 Today I'd like to talk about one of the most precious gems in this collection: Spring Physics . Spring physics are like a secret ingredient; they make all animations taste better. The motion produced using spring physics is fluid and organic. It's believable ; springs do a better job tricking our brains into thinking that something is actually moving.…from joshwcomeau.com

Hi, I'm the author of this little Web Audio toy which does physical modeling synthesis using a simple spring-mass system. My current area of research is in sparse, event-based encodings of musical audio (https://blog.cochlea.xyz/sparse-interpretable-audio-codec-pa...). I'm very interested in decomposing audio signals into a description of the "system" (e.g., room, instrument, vocal tract, etc.) and a sparse "control signal" which describes how and when energy is injected into that system. This toy was a great way to start learning about physical modeling synthesis, which seems…

The state of animation in React, introducing react-spring2018 · ▲5

Most you you will probably be familiar with react-motion and Facebooks animated (react-natives default). Both are practically go-to solutions in their respective fields, but do leave a lot to be desired. Animated interpolates everything and is fast, but misses essential primitives and can be troublesome to use due to its imperative nature. React-motion is declarative but can't interpolate and performs slower. After switching between the two for about a year i've decided to pick up where the two have left off: So this is react-spring: https://github.com/drcmda/react-spring…

Almost eight years ago I launched an online “Linux sysadmin course for newbies” here at HN. It was a side-project that went well, but never generated enough money to allow me to fully commit to leaving the Day Job. After surviving the Big C, and getting made redundant I thought I might improve and relaunch it commercially – but my doctors are a pessimistic bunch, so it looked like I didn’t have the time. Instead, I rejigged/relaunched it via a Reddit forum this February as free and open - and have now gathered a team of helpers to ensure that it keeps going each month even after I can’t…
