Interactive notes for algebra based physics with explorable explanations

Simulation-based high school physics course notes launched on March 14, 2020 with 295 votes, #41 of 4,417 launches that month and more than 95% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 6 years on.

In plain words

This is a free resource of high school physics course notes built around simulations and interactive elements. Designed for students and teachers, it presents physics concepts through visual demonstrations rather than text alone. The course covers standard high school physics topics with embedded simulations that let users manipulate variables and observe outcomes in real time. It launched in 2020 and is available online.

From the sources

This site contains course notes for algebra based physics with explorable explanations . I wrote most of it around 2018, but I'm still adding content and fixing bugs as of 2026. Let me know if you have any ideas or if you found one of the numerous mistakes. The code is open source and hosted on github . It's free to use under the GNU General Public License v3.0 . The diagrams are SVG written in a text editor. The math is rendered with the typesetting library KaTeX . The simulations are JavaScript outputting to canvas or SVG. Collision simulations use the Matter.js 2-D physicsfrom landgreen.github.io

    I made a cheap alternative to college-level math & physics tutoring2024 · ▲391

Hi everyone! I’m the founder of Explanations (https://explanations.app). I’m building a website where students can get college level math & physics help for 1/10th the cost of private tutoring. You’d type a question, and your teacher replies by drawing a Youtube/KhanAcademy-style video; and this happens asynchronously throughout the week. When I was studying at MIT, I often had to wait 40-60 minutes in line just to get 5 minutes of “help” from a TA - when I needed 1-2 hours. I understood that TAs can’t spend all their time helping me. That’s understandable. But what made…

I started teaching my daughter physics by showing her how things actually work - plucking guitar strings to explain vibration, mixing paints to understand light, dropping objects to see gravity in action. She learned so much faster through hands-on exploration than through books or videos. That's when I realized: what if I could recreate these physical experiments as interactive simulations? Lumen is the result - an interactive physics playground covering sound, light, motion, life, and mechanics. Each module lets you manipulate variables in real-time and see/hear the results…
