In plain words

Async UI is a Rust user interface library designed for developers building applications with asynchronous programming. It treats all UI elements as futures, enabling a functional approach to building interfaces. The library integrates Rust's async/await system directly into UI development, allowing developers to write reactive components naturally. It is intended for Rust programmers who want to leverage async patterns in their user interface code.

This blog post is intended for readers with some experiences in async Rust. It assumes you know what a Future is! Async UI is a proof-of-concept Rust UI library with backends for the web (HTML/JS) and GTK 4. UI widgets are retained : they run some code, stay there and wait for some events (such as user interactions), and then run some more code to handle those events. Sync Rust cannot handle the stay there and wait for some events step in a clean way. Widgets can live for arbitrarily long, and sync Rust lifetimes cannot express that. Async Rust solves this problem: in async functions, lifetimes can span across await points, and await points may pause for however long we want. This allows us…from wishawa.github.io

Hey HN, this is Will and David from Fortress (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41426998). We use a lot of async Rust internally, and created this library out of a need for an async-aware concurrent hashmap since there weren’t many available in the Rust ecosystem. Whirlwind is a sharded HashMap with a fully asynchronous API. Just as dashmap is a replacement for std::sync::RwLock, whirlwind aims to be a replacement for tokio::sync::RwLock. It has a similar design and performance characteristics to dashmap, but seems to perform better in read-heavy workloads with tokio's…

Hi, I made a bridge (https://github.com/fzyzcjy/flutter_rust_bridge v2.0.0) between Flutter and Rust, which auto translates syntaxes like arbitrary types, &mut, async, traits, results, closure (callback), lifetimes, etc. The goal is to make a bridge between the two, seamlessly as if working in one single language. Then, as an example, I showed how to write Rust applications with GUI by utilizing Flutter. That is discussed in the link in details. To play with it, please visit the GitHub repo, or refer to the end of the article for detailed folders and commands. When I…

Hi, I’m Mikkel and I’m building Async, an open-sourced developer tool that combines AI coding with task management and code review. What Async does: - Automatically researches coding tasks, asks clarifying questions, then executes code changes in the cloud - Breaks work into reviewable subtasks with stack diffs for easier code review - Handles the full workflow from issue to merged PR without leaving the app Demo here: https://youtu.be/98k42b8GF4s?si=Azf3FIWAbpsXxk3_ I’ve been working as a developer for over a decade now. I’ve tried all sorts of AI tools out there including…

Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…

Hey HN, I 3d scanned the interior of the Great Pyramid / Khufu's pyramid for the Giza Project this summer and just finished the guided version to share. Would love feedback and/or problems you encounter. I used both a Leica BLK 360 and Matterport Pro 2 to do the scanning and the Matterport SDK for the web viewer. Matterport's web display with Three.js has been the most accessible to a wide audience in the past (previous iterations are in Unity and Unreal, but difficult to download over slower connections). I've been interviewing social studies teachers around the 6th grade level to…

  • Last time I posted this it didn't garner much interest. There have been lots of improvements and fixes since the last release. Quick list of features: - Workspaces - Tabs - Nested Folders - Lots of context menus - Response history - Plugins - Runs fully in the browser and runs offline if necessary - Chrome and Firefox extension to bypass CORS restrictions - Desktop builds for all platforms - GraphQL support - Import collections exported from Postman and Insomnia - Simple user friendly interface I built this because I love Insomnia but wanted a portable version that I could run in the…

  • APIs are a little like the open road—always waiting, full of opportunity, but hardly utilized. So here’s America, composed of several APIs that paint a vivid, real-time picture of a good old-fashioned road trip. Get local classifieds and photos. Tune into local radio stations. Talk wit other drivers. And more. Exploring the country by car was an invaluable experience for me during my time in the states. I’ve since moved to Barcelona, and find myself missing the territory. This is my attempt at recreating the magic.
