BeAware

The d/Deaf assistant to communicate better

BeAware launched on May 16, 2022 with 66 votes, #622 of 2,942 launches that month and more than 50% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 4 years on.

What it does

Deaf people across the world are forced to pay over $50/yr for Apps that they need to use in their everyday lives. Instead we decided to provide it for free in 15+ languages, following Khan Academy's model, to ensure everyone has access to tools needed!

It works pretty well. Very satisfied. I use it to help my great grandma (who is very hard of hearing) understand what is being said to her. It’s truly worth it. She feels more included in daily life and we don’t have to repeat ourself 100 times. It’s saved her a lot of heartache. It works pretty well. Very satisfied. The difference in cost between products that are developed as accessibility tools compared to consumer products is huge. One example is camera glasses where the accessibility product costs ~$3000 (Envision Glasses), and the consumer product costs ~$300 (Ray-Ban Meta). In this case the Ray-Ban Meta is getting accessibility features. The functionality is promising according to reviews, but requires the user to say "Hey meta what am I looking at" every time a scene is to be described. The battery life seem underwhelming as well. It would be nice to have an cheap and open source alternative to…

Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…
