Bike Spike

LoJack + OnStar + Fitbit for your Bike

Bike Spike launched on February 24, 2014 with 62 votes, #397 of 1,100 launches that month. The site was still online in September 2026, 12 years on.

What it does

See a map with your bike’s current location and track your baby down. Hands off! Get alerts if your parked bike is jostled or falls over. Accelerometer sensitivity tuned-to-taste. Digitally lock your bike by marking it ‘parked’ and receive an alert if it’s moved. Chirp chirp! Webpage ‘flyers’ include bike photos and up-to-date location. Share with social media and police. BikeSpike’s got brains. The GPS tracker constantly transmits a cell signal and doesn’t depend on your smartphone. BikeSpike’s not just for bike protection, log ride stats with our handy app. Start and stop rides, ‘geo-fence’ lock your bike, receive push alerts, and track your bike’s location. I released this JS library last month (today is version 2.0 release, fixing v1.0's rough edges), it makes use of HTML5's pushState and preloading to make a website instant. It works like this: before clicking on a link, you'll hover over it. And there's a delay of 200-300 ms between these two events. InstantClick uses this delay to preload a page, when you click on a link it will display instantly in most case. (You can test on the website.) That's…

For a while, I had this idea of redesigning Microsoft employee badges for a modern and neat look. So I spared a few hours this weekend. It’s over a year Microsoft has started to rebrand itself, starting from its logo to a brand new looking OS, from campus shuttles to direction signs on the cam
