Butterfish Shell launched on September 28, 2023 with 1 votes. The site was still online in September 2026, 3 years on.
What it does
Butterfish is for people who work from the command line, it adds AI prompting to your shell (bash, zsh) with OpenAI. Think Github Copilot for shell.
Butterfish is for people who work from the command line, it adds AI prompting to your shell (bash, zsh) with OpenAI (or compatible APIs). Think Github Copilot for shell. Here’s how it works: use your shell as normal, start a command with a capital letter to prompt the AI. The AI sees the shell history, so you can ask contextual questions like “Why did that command fail?”. This is a magical UX pattern – you get high-context AI help exactly when you want it, NO COPY/PASTING. Feedback and external contribution is very welcome! Butterfish is open source under the MIT license. We hope that you find it useful! Butterfish works on MacOS and Linux. You can install via…from butterfi.sh

It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…
