Cairn

Your Google Maps rank is a map, not a number

What it does

Cairn runs 25 real Google Maps searches across your city and draws the result on real neighborhood boundaries, so you see exactly where customers find you, where they don't, and who's winning each area. Then it turns the gaps into a plain-English fix plan and checks on the next scan whether each fix landed. The free scan is complete: no email gate, nothing withheld. Paid plans watch weekly.

A local visibility scanner for small businesses. Type your business name, see where you rank across your own city on a map of real neighborhoods, and exactly what to fix. Honest, complete, free.

Cairn stands at 25 spots across your city and searches like a customer. You get the map Google really shows — who beats you where — and the fixes, in plain English. Every scan also reads your website and Google’s AI answer . Watching asks ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity too, weekly. Couscous Hice ranks #1 for “moroccan restaurant” across most of Denver — ahead of restaurants with ten times its reviews. Its profile listed one generic category: “Restaurant.” Winning a search almost nobody makes, invisible to every search with volume. The fixes took an afternoon, and all of them were free. Every area is a real neighborhood or city boundary, colored by where you rank to someone standing there.…from cairnlocal.com

Hello HN! I found that picking out plausible but diverse skin tones for my digital art and game development projects was kind of difficult, and I got curious about if there was a way to define a color space that made it easy. I've built a color picker and procedural generation algorithm based on the space as well as a bunch of other fun js features and demos throughout the page that use the equations. If you find it interesting, I have lots of explanations of how I built it and what properties the space has. The methodology might be a bit shaky, but hopefully the result is as helpful for…

  • I trained a 125M-parameter transformer to autocomplete piano performances in real time (~108 notes/sec on an iPhone 15). The idea is basically GitHub Copilot or Tabnine, except instead of prompting it with code, you prompt it by playing a few notes on a MIDI piano. The model then continues what you played, entirely on-device. The app is free if anyone wants to try it. Happy to answer questions about the model, training, Core ML, or the many things that didn't work.
