In plain words
Civilian is an open-source Java web framework for building server-side applications that run in servlet containers. It provides a lightweight, complete solution for connecting frontend and backend code without imposing constraints on client design, HTML, CSS, or JavaScript. The framework supports both traditional web applications and single-page applications, leaving backend data implementation choices entirely to developers.

From the sources
A small, fast, elegant and complete framework to write web applications. Civilian is a server-side framework to develop web applications. It is written in Java (11+) and runs in any servlet (3.1+) container. It is published as open source and free to use. Civilian does not teach you how to implement your data backend. And it does not restrict your client design in terms of HTML layout, CSS rules, JavaScript code, Ajax conversations and data representation. It just helps to build a bridge between these ends. It supports development of traditional round trip applications but also serves single-page apps based on client-side MVC/MVVM JavaScript frameworks. Citizen – A Node.js web app framework for fans of classic app servers2024 · github.com · ▲82Citizen is a web application framework I started building years ago when I was first learning Node. I've added features and improved stability/performance continuously and finally decided it was worthy of 1.0 status. I think it might appeal to devs like me (old guys) who came up on app servers like ColdFusion, .NET, PHP, etc. and prefer the server do the heavy lifting. It doesn't dictate anything about your front end, and instead tries to be as flexible as possible in providing whatever output the client might need, whether it's a single fully-rendered HTML view, partials, JSON, or…

Talanoa▲346Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…
