Configure domain redirects and URL forwarding with a simple DNS record

Configure domain redirects and URL forwarding with a simple DNS record launched on July 22, 2014 with 25 votes and more than 75% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 12 years on.

In plain words

Redirect.name enables URL forwarding through DNS records without requiring servers, accounts, or dashboards. Users configure redirects by pointing a hostname to the service's server and adding a TXT record that specifies the destination URL. The service reads the TXT record at request time and issues the redirect, keeping DNS providers as the single source of truth. It works with standard DNS records or A records for providers without CNAME flattening support.

From the sources

DNS-based URL redirects. No server, no signup, no dashboard. Two DNS records describe a redirect: one points your hostname at our server, and a TXT record describes where to send visitors. We read the TXT record at request time and issue the redirect. No accounts, no dashboard. Your DNS provider is the source of truth. If your DNS provider doesn't support CNAME flattening at the apex (sometimes offered as an ALIAS or ANAME record), you can use an A record pointing to 45.55.126.223 instead. The _redirect. prefix is required because TXT and CNAME records can't coexist at the same name. The TXT record value is the rule. The syntax is plain English: Destinations can use http:// , https:// ,…from redirect.name

Hi HN, This is a project [1] I've been working on for a little while and I'm interested in your feedback and point of view. Many of us would have verified a domain name by pasting a string into a DNS TXT record. Some providers ask us to store this DNS TXT record at a domain using a DNS label like "_provider" e.g. _provider.yourdomain.com, and some providers ask that you do it at the zone apex (God help us [2]). The Domain Verification protocol stores a DNS TXT record at a DNS name derived from a hashed "verifiable identifier" (think email, telephone, DID), enabling anyone that can prove…
