Create an IoT Environmental Sensor with NodeMCU and Lua

Build your own IoT sensor with the NodeMCU and Lua code coupled with the BME280 to measure temperature, humidity and air-pressure and more.

Create an IoT Environmental Sensor with NodeMCU and Lua launched on July 9, 2018 with 16 votes, #832 of 2,673 launches that month and more than 75% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 8 years on.

In plain words

This is a guide for building a custom IoT environmental sensor using NodeMCU, a Lua-programmable platform based on the ESP8266 Wi-Fi chip. It covers integrating the BME280 sensor to measure temperature, humidity, and air pressure, then transmitting data to cloud platforms or other locations for processing. The guide compares NodeMCU to Raspberry Pi, discussing trade-offs for IoT sensor applications. Intended for developers interested in IoT projects and sensor data collection.

From the sources

In this post I want to show you how to create your own IoT sensor with the NodeMCU and the Lua programming language. The device called the NodeMCU makes it easy to start reading sensor data, sending it back to another location for processing or aggregation, such as the cloud. We'll also compare the NodeMCU to the Raspberry Pi and talk about the pros/cons of each for an IoT sensor. NodeMCU is an open source IoT platform. It includes firmware which runs on the ESP8266 Wi-Fi SoC from Espressif Systems, and hardware which is based on the ESP-12 module. The device looks similar to an Arduino or Raspberry Pi Zero featuring a USB port for power or programming and features a dedicated chip for…from blog.alexellis.io

Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…
