CutWord

Hi HN, I’m Ben, long time web developer but this is my first time building a macOS app. I film a lot of tutorial and talking-head content and wanted to make it easier to chop out mistakes. So I built CutWord, a macOS app that lets you mark cue points with voice commands while you’re recording. Once the app downloads a Whisper model everything runs locally, so nothing leaves your machine. You can export a trimmed video directly from the app or export a FCPXML file that can be imported into Final Cut or DaVinci Resolve for finishing. Built with SwiftUI and AVFoundation. TestFlight:…

CutWord launched on June 8, 2025 with 9 votes, #3,023 of 7,999 launches that month and more than 50% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 1 year on.

What it does

A macOS app that lets you mark cue points with voice commands while you’re recording.

A MacOS application that transforms commands spoken during recording into instant timeline edits.

Commands spoken during recording are transformed into instant timeline edits. Export to Final Cut Pro and DaVinci Resolve for advanced editing, or skip the NLE entirely and export finished videos ready for social media. Speak commands like "new take" and "save take" to mark perfect edits instantly during recording. Preview and refine your edits with an integrated video player that shows exactly what your final cut will look like. Everything runs locally on your Mac—your data stays private, always. Adjust IN and OUT points in real-time with an intuitive interface, perfecting your timeline effortlessly. Speak simple command words like 'new take' or 'save take' while recording. Drop your video…from cutword.com

Heeey! I built a macOS copilot that has been useful to me, so I open sourced it in case others would find it useful too. It's pretty simple: - Use a keyboard shortcut to take a screenshot of your active macOS window and start recording the microphone. - Speak your question, then press the keyboard shortcut again to send your question + screenshot off to OpenAI Vision - The Vision response is presented in-context/overlayed over the active window, and spoken to you as audio. - The app keeps running in the background, only taking a screenshot/listening when activated by keyboard…

I built a voice dictation app for macOS mostly because I was tired of how awful Siri is and I didn't want to pay a subscription for cloud tools. The app uses NVIDIA's Parakeet v3 (TDT) as the primary engine. Inference is handled by the FluidAudio library. It's insanely fast on M-series chips. For Intel users, I added local Whisper support ranging from Tiny up to Large v3 Turbo (quantized to save space). The interesting part was the AI integration. I originally tried to pipeline the ASR output into Apple's Intelligence Foundation Model. It was a nightmare, because the content moderation…

I built a macOS dictation app where everything runs on-device. Transcription, auto-correct, translation. No audio or text leaves your machine. It ships with 4 transcription engines you can swap between: WhisperKit (99 languages), NVIDIA Parakeet TDT 0.6B (25 European languages, fastest of the bunch), Qwen3-ASR 0.6B (30 languages), and Apple Speech on macOS 26+. They all run through CoreML/Metal. Whisper is the most versatile, Parakeet wins on raw latency for European languages, Qwen3 does better with CJK. I went with a protocol-based architecture so you pick the engine that fits your…

Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…

Hey HN! Pilots everywhere are required to keep a logbook of all their flying hours, aircraft, airports, and so on. Since I track everything digitally (some people still just use paper logbooks!), I put together some data visualizations and a few 3D globes to show my flying history. This globe is probably my favourite so far: https://jameshard.ing/pilot/globes/all If you’ve got ideas for other graphs or ways to show this kind of data, I’d love to hear them!

  • I was the main contributor to workout.lol, an open-source fitness app to easily build a workout routine. The project had traction (1.4k GitHub stars, 95 forks, ~20K visits/month), but was eventually sold due to video licensing hurdles. The new owner stopped maintaining it, and the repo went abandoned. Over the next 9 months, I sent 15 emails to try to save it : no replies. Feature requests & issues were ignored. The community was left with a "broken" tool let's say. I couldn't just let it die So I built the new version from scratch with the same open-source spirit, but a better…
