I'm an airline pilot – I built interactive graphs/globes of my flights

Hey HN! Pilots everywhere are required to keep a logbook of all their flying hours, aircraft, airports, and so on. Since I track everything digitally (some people still just use paper logbooks!), I put together some data visualizations and a few 3D globes to show my flying history. This globe is probably my favourite so far: https://jameshard.ing/pilot/globes/all If you’ve got ideas for other graphs or ways to show this kind of data, I’d love to hear them!

In plain words

This project transforms pilot logbook data into interactive visualizations and 3D globes showing flying hours, aircraft types, and airport locations. Built by a commercial airline pilot who digitizes records instead of using traditional paper logbooks, it provides pilots with a dynamic way to explore and display their flight history. The tool is designed for pilots who want to visualize their accumulated flying experience geographically and chronologically.

From the sources

Since 2023, I have been a First Officer on the Airbus A350 with British Airways operating out of London Heathrow. Prior to this, I flew the Airbus A320 family based at Heathrow and Gatwick since 2016. I joined British Airways through their cadet scheme in 2014, which included an Integrated ATPL course that I completed at FTEJerez in Andalucia, Spain 🇪🇸. My flying journey began in Canada 🇨🇦, where I obtained my Glider Pilot License, Instructor Rating, and my PPL through Canadian Air Cadet scholarships. I log all of my flights digitally using LogTen Pro , which lets me query them using SQL and present them in infographic format. My favourite is the GitHub-style flying history. I've created a web app for querying and visualization of ADS-B datasets: https://adsb.exposed/ Source code: https://github.com/ClickHouse/adsb.exposed/ The results significantly exceeded my expectations because the pictures are insanely beautiful, and the data is a treasure trove. It proves many statements that were not certain: - it is feasible to generate tiles by aggregation on a pixel level (instead of hexagons or rectangular grid); - it does not require JPG/PNG tiles - we can transfer raw bitmap data with zstd compression; - it is possible to…

Hello, I'd like to share a 3D plane tracking web app that I developed called: skies-adsb. Living near KMIA (a very busy airport), I spend a lot of time plane spotting and thought it would be cool to track planes in 3D. In October 2021, I built a prototype 3D ADS-B flight tracker called skies-adsb using p5.js. In April 2022, I released version 1.0 of skies-adsb, rewritten in Three.js. However, this release still relied on manual editing of GeoJSON layers. By late 2024, I had learned enough about GIS and GeoPandas to automate map creation using custom GeoJSON layers. During the Christmas…

    Planes.fyi – 3D aircraft and airport visualizationsDec 2025 · planes.fyi · ▲8

Hey HN! A long time ago I built a map of trains at trains.fyi, and then realized nobody had bought planes.fyi - so this is my new map project. It's a bunch of things, but mostly, a 3D map of aircraft around given airports, as well as the weather, ATIS, and other data sources visualized in 3D and unique ways. Like most of the stuff I build, it's got no real use, but I think it's neat. If you like planes, check out the CYYZ/KJFK map, weather, and runway tabs - I put the most work into that. Also any feature requests, questions, comments, etc are always appreciated!
