DecayBlock

Add an intelligent timeout to block distracting websites

DecayBlock launched on October 2, 2025 with 6 votes. The site was still online in September 2026, 1 year on.

What it does

Tired of getting sucked into rabbit holes on YouTube, Instagram, or X? This week I'm launching DecayBlock - an extension that adds a dynamic timeout to websites. I've been using it for months. It's massively improved my productivity and focus.

Hey HN, A few months ago I noticed I was spending way too much time on YouTube + Reddit (like 4–5 hours per day). I tried a bunch of blockers, but most of them just hard-block everything… and when I actually need a YT for debugging, I end up disabling the blocker and never turning it back on. So I built ZenBlock to solve my problem: it blocks distracting sites, but when you try to open one, it shows a short breathing exercise, After that you can choose to get temporary access (5–30 min). The goal is to make you aware of distraction. this is more inclined towards Tech-wise: it’s built using…

Site blockers on Chrome all run based on a freemium model, and i've always been annoyed by how I couldn't find one that had quite all of the features I need. So, I spent a bunch of time building one with all of the features I wanted. Scheduling, time tracking, a peaceful and nice block screen, nice visuals, and easy adding of new sites. All completely free. Check it out!

  • I went down the rabbit hole on a side project and ended up building this: Strange Attractors(https://blog.shashanktomar.com/posts/strange-attractors). It’s built with three.js. Working on it reminded me of the little "maths for fun" exercises I used to do while learning programming in early days. Just trying things out, getting fascinated and geeky, and being surprised by the results. I spent way too much time on this, but it was extreme fun. My favorite part: someone pointed me to the Simone Attractor on Threads. It is a 2D attractor and I asked GPT to extrapolate it to…

  • Hey all, I built this. It’s not trying to capture every autistic experience (that’d be impossible). It’s based on my own lived experience as well as that of friends on the spectrum. I'm trying to give people a feel for what masking, decision fatigue, and burnout can look like day-to-day. That’s hard to explain in words, but easier to show through choices and stats. I'm not trying to "define autism". I’ve gotten good feedback here about resilience, meds, and difficulty tuning. I’ll keep tweaking it. If even a few people walk away thinking, "ah, maybe that’s why my coworker struggles in those…
