Detours: Traffic & Road Alerts

What it does

Every traffic app blasts noise. Detours alerts on exactly your commute — pick your highways, set a radius. Nothing outside it reaches you. Underneath: California Highway Patrol’s live dispatch feed, translated from shorthand into plain English ("VEH 1125" → vehicle blocking the road), plus Caltrans Lane Closure System — scheduled construction and maintenance no CHP feed ever shows, so you know about tonight's closure before you're stuck in it.

Free · In‑App Purchases · Designed for iPhone. Not verified for macOS. This app is phenomenal for pretty much everyone that drives regularly but especially those of us who commute to work. Detours is one of those apps you don’t realize you need until you start using it. The interface is clean, fast, and incredibly easy to navigate. No lag whatsoever like other traffic incident apps. It gives me a heads-up on road closures and traffic issues before they become a problem, which has saved me time and frustration on multiple occasions going to and coming from work. The information is accurate, updates quickly, and makes planning my routes much easier. Highly recommend this app to anyone who…from apps.apple.com

  I built a Red Flag Warning zone-check tool for the East Bay in 48hJun 2026 · redflag-check.info · ▲17

Hey HN. I'm a high schooler in Fremont, CA. Tuesday morning I got a county-wide AC Alert text telling everyone in Alameda County to prepare a go-bag for an East Bay Hills Red Flag Warning that starts tonight at 11 PM. The text went to ~half a million phones. The actual NWS warning polygon only covers East Bay Hills (NWS zone CAZ515). Most people who got the text don't need a go-bag tonight. Some in the hills don't realize how close they are. So I built this tool - https://redflag-check.info/ mit licensed public github -…

  Clipto MCP▲655

Hey HN, We recently built Clipto. It’s a tool that lets you search over terabytes of video, audio, and images on your computer, without relying on the cloud. Motivation: we probably all had this similar experience, we know a moment exists in a video or audio, but finding it takes hours scrubbing the timeline. You can send all the media to process in the cloud, but it’s slow, expensive and raises privacy concerns. So we decided to build our own on-device media search engine. How it works (high level): 1. We ingest video, audio, image; normalize formats via ffmpeg; run content analysis to…

Simple algorithm and color space to generate diverse skin tones▲627

Hello HN! I found that picking out plausible but diverse skin tones for my digital art and game development projects was kind of difficult, and I got curious about if there was a way to define a color space that made it easy. I've built a color picker and procedural generation algorithm based on the space as well as a bunch of other fun js features and demos throughout the page that use the equations. If you find it interesting, I have lots of explanations of how I built it and what properties the space has. The methodology might be a bit shaky, but hopefully the result is as helpful for…
