Developer to Manager

Learn how to become a kick-ass engineering manager!

Developer to Manager launched on April 3, 2019 with 3 votes. The site was still online in September 2026, 7 years on.

What it does

Developer to Manager is a knowledge & career platform for developers who plan to move to management. We interview engineering managers at different career points, to try to get a sense of how it was like for them to move from development to management.

Thanks everyone for spending time reading the interviews on Developer to Manager . I've had a lot of fun curating them. Unfortunately, I don't have the time anymore continue to source interviews and maintain this project. I appreciate your support and wish you all the best in your own developer to manager journey! If you'd like to get in touch, feel free to reach me via emailfrom devtomanager.com

Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…
