What it does

Most nature apps stop at identification. Fauna gets you outside to discover the wildlife around you. Catch 'em all in real life from your backyard to the other side of the world, and earn badges as your field journal grows! Explore what's blooming, migrating, and unfolding each month, plus the wildlife you can spot at every destination.

i love this app, it gives a lot of interesting facts about species i didn’t know about, it even tells you the risk level, predators, and more. my only suggestion for fauna is to display the rarity level for a species when you log it, then I don’t have to ask the ai myself. other than that this is a really good app for people who enjoy learning about and collecting different species!! i love this app, it gives a lot of interesting facts about species i didn’t know about, it even tells you the risk level, predators, and more. my only suggestion for fauna is to display the rarity level for a species when you log it, then I don’t have to ask the ai myself. other than that this is a really good…from apps.apple.com

Dear HN, My wife and I both love nature and have always wanted a Pokémon go style app, to collect and learn about different species we find. All the usual species identifying apps were didn’t feel fun enough, so we designed and built one together! Would love for you guys to give it a try and share any thoughts you have.

  • Needle: We Distilled Gemini Tool Calling into a 26M Model▲776

Hey HN, Henry here from Cactus. We open-sourced Needle, a 26M parameter function-calling (tool use) model. It runs at 6000 tok/s prefill and 1200 tok/s decode on consumer devices. We were always frustrated by the little effort made towards building agentic models that run on budget phones, so we conducted investigations that led to an observation: agentic experiences are built upon tool calling, and massive models are overkill for it. Tool calling is fundamentally retrieval-and-assembly (match query to tool name, extract argument values, emit JSON), not reasoning. Cross-attention…
