Filmbox
Really good motion picture film emulation
Filmbox launched on December 10, 2020 with 4 votes, #1,566 of 3,242 launches that month. The site was still online in September 2026, 5 years on.
What it does
A complete reproduction of photochemical motion picture imaging. Driven by empirical data and tailored to specific digital sensors. Built for high-end production. The entire photochemical imaging process, running on your GPU. Film is undead.
Accurately transform digital cinema footage to exhibit the grain, halation, and soul of motion picture film. Plugin for DaVinci Resolve, Baselight, Livegrade Frontier, Colorfront, Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Final Cut Pro.
Detail & Halation The physics of emulsion enables film to render detail in ways that are notoriously difficult to faithfully reproduce. "Halation", "Acutance", and "Aura" are loose terms for pieces of a phenomenon far more complex than a glow. Filmbox uses advanced processing to achieve an indistinguishable match to a negative’s soft yet detailed character across its latitude and color response. Color & Tone Dense datasets are used to transform spectral radiance values from the digital image to match the film negative’s complex response to those same light values across its latitude, along with its intricate interaction with print film — faithfully reproducing the combined response of a…from videovillage.com

Filmbox, physically accurate film emulation, now on Linux and Windows2023 · videovillage.co · ▲658We released Filmbox two years ago, and it has gotten a great response. It's been used in huge movies like "Everything Everywhere All At Once". It's been a huge rewrite to get this working on Linux and Windows from our original Mac and Metal code. We also have some interesting uses of cross-platform Swift + Electron in our plugin manager app, and cross-platform Swift generally in the plugin. Hopefully we can detail that in a blog post at some point. There's a free Filmbox Lite version to try, if you're interested.

It's been a long slow hog and I almost gave up a few times (more than a few) but when covid hit this year it gave me some time to really focus on my product. There were stupid user journey things that I knew needed fixed. There were some features I knew needed added. And I knew the pricing was wrong. I spent some hardcore time working on these things back in March / April and since then my MRR has continued to grow. My product is SongBox (https://songbox.rocks) - it's an alternative to things like bandcamp and soundcloud for creators who need to share audio files privately.…
