Functions as a Service (FaaS) on Docker Swarm

Learn about a new proof of concept called Functions as a Service FaaS which brings Serverless to Docker Swarm Mode using brand new 1.13 features.

Functions as a Service (FaaS) on Docker Swarm launched on January 4, 2017 with 49 votes, #1,453 of 3,671 launches that month and more than 90% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 9 years on.

In plain words

Functions as a Service (FaaS) is a proof of concept that implements serverless computing on Docker Swarm Mode, leveraging Docker 1.13 features. It provides an alternative to AWS Lambda and Kubernetes Jobs for running functions without managing infrastructure. The project explores how serverless architectures can be standardized and implemented within Docker's native clustering capabilities.

One of 2016's key buzzwords was serverless - but is anyone sure what that means? Both AWS Lambda and Kubernetes Jobs provide their own solutions in this space, but.. I'm not sure that we have a clearly defined standard on what serverless should look like and how it should behave. Martin Fowler also maintains a Bliki entry on Serverless if you want to read more. Since the original post on 4th Jan development has continued in the FaaS repo and progress has been made towards answering the above questions. An issue was opened on the Docker Github repo on 23rd June just after Swarm Mode was released: Swarm mode should support batch/cron jobs . It speaks to the complexity that is involved in…from blog.alexellis.io

Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…
