What it does
Gemma 3n is Google's new open model, optimized for on-device multimodal AI. Its novel MatFormer architecture enables powerful yet efficient models (like the 2B/4B variants) that can run locally on phones and laptops. Supports image, audio & video.
Learn how to build with Gemma 3n, a mobile-first architecture, MatFormer technology, Per-Layer Embeddings, and new audio and vision encoders.
The first Gemma model launched early last year and has since grown into a thriving Gemmaverse of over 160 million collective downloads. This ecosystem includes our family of over a dozen specialized models for everything from safeguarding to medical applications and, most inspiringly, the countless innovations from the community. From innovators like Roboflow building enterprise computer vision to the Institute of Science Tokyo creating highly-capable Japanese Gemma variants, your work has shown us the path forward. Building on this incredible momentum, we're excited to announce the full release of Gemma 3n. While last month's preview offered a glimpse, today unlocks the full power of this…from developers.googleblog.com

Gemma 4 Multimodal Fine-Tuner for Apple SiliconApr 2026 · github.com · ▲235About six months ago, I started working on a project to fine-tune Whisper locally on my M2 Ultra Mac Studio with a limited compute budget. I got into it. The problem I had at the time was I had 15,000 hours of audio data in Google Cloud Storage, and there was no way I could fit all the audio onto my local machine, so I built a system to stream data from my GCS to my machine during training. Gemma 3n came out, so I added that. Kinda went nuts, tbh. Then I put it on the shelf. When Gemma 4 came out a few days ago, I dusted it off, cleaned it up, broke out the Gemma part from the Whisper…

Hey HN! Pilots everywhere are required to keep a logbook of all their flying hours, aircraft, airports, and so on. Since I track everything digitally (some people still just use paper logbooks!), I put together some data visualizations and a few 3D globes to show my flying history. This globe is probably my favourite so far: https://jameshard.ing/pilot/globes/all If you’ve got ideas for other graphs or ways to show this kind of data, I’d love to hear them!

I was the main contributor to workout.lol, an open-source fitness app to easily build a workout routine. The project had traction (1.4k GitHub stars, 95 forks, ~20K visits/month), but was eventually sold due to video licensing hurdles. The new owner stopped maintaining it, and the repo went abandoned. Over the next 9 months, I sent 15 emails to try to save it : no replies. Feature requests & issues were ignored. The community was left with a "broken" tool let's say. I couldn't just let it die So I built the new version from scratch with the same open-source spirit, but a better…
