Generate User Interface Components with GPT-3

I’m building an experimental tool that can generate a UI component from a high-level text description, i.e. “Design a card for viewing goals in a goal tracking application”. Basically, stable diffusion but for user interface components instead of images. This tool is at best a proof of concept. It currently only generates a single type of component (small cards that have basic info about an object), but the goal is to be able to design entire applications (either in one fell swoop or by piecing together components that the tool generates). The components it generates can be exported as react…

In plain words

This experimental tool generates user interface components from text descriptions using GPT-3, functioning as a generative design system for UI development. Currently a proof of concept, it creates small card components based on plain-language prompts and exports them as React code. Users can also request modifications to existing designs. The tool is aimed at developers and designers interested in exploring AI-assisted component generation, though the maker acknowledges it remains early-stage and of limited practical use at present.

In the maker’s words, at launch

I’m building an experimental tool that can generate a UI component from a high-level text description, i.e. “Design a card for viewing goals in a goal tracking application”. Basically, stable diffusion but for user interface components instead of images. This tool is at best a proof of concept. It currently only generates a single type of component (small cards that have basic info about an object), but the goal is to be able to design entire applications (either in one fell swoop or by piecing together components that the tool generates). The components it generates can be exported as react code. You can also have it modify an existing design. The tool isn't useful yet but it's somewhat fun to play around with. Having it generate a component rather than an entire screen made the problem easier but I'm not sure if there are any users that this would appeal to. I could see it appealing to developers who lack design and CSS skills and want to quickly build a decent looking frontend for their app. Looking forward to hearing what you guys think of this project and the generative AI for UI space in general. • I trained a 125M-parameter transformer to autocomplete piano performances in real time (~108 notes/sec on an iPhone 15). The idea is basically GitHub Copilot or Tabnine, except instead of prompting it with code, you prompt it by playing a few notes on a MIDI piano. The model then continues what you played, entirely on-device. The app is free if anyone wants to try it. Happy to answer questions about the model, training, Core ML, or the many things that didn't work.

  • Hey HN, Henry from Cactus here! We previously released Cactus Needle, a 14MB agentic LLM for tool call, device use, and structured extraction for phones, wearables, smart homes, small robots and microcontrollers. We got really great feedback here, and have now incorporated the suggestions to release Needle 2. The whole model is a single 14MB binary that runs a full session in 28MB of RAM; 45m parameters at 2bit compression. Needle hits 500 tokens/sec decode speed on a Raspberry Pi 5, sits between 400-1,500 tokens/sec on VR devices like Meta Quest 3S and Apple Vision Pro, and ranges…
