GitStatusBar

Git status in the menu bar. Always local, always fast

GitStatusBar launched on May 29, 2026 with 2 votes, #6,288 of 20,538 launches that month.

What it does

simplicity + privacy + minimalism 1. It lives in the menu bar, not as a separate app window or dashboard. 2. It gives instant visual repo status (clean/dirty branch-level awareness) with low overhead, not a full git client workflow. 3. It stays local-first: no account, no telemetry, no app-level tracking. 4. It avoids heavy background behavior; no constant background polling in normal operations

GitStatusBar is a native macOS menu bar app that scans local git repositories and shows branch, clean, dirty, ahead, and behind status at a glance.

Scan your local git repositories and see branch, clean, dirty, ahead, and behind status from the menu bar. Scan one or more folders and compare clean, dirty, ahead, and behind counts. Open repos in Finder, Terminal, editors, or their hosted remote pages. GitStatusBar checks your repositories when you ask it to. Local refresh updates working-tree status, and remote fetch only happens from the explicit Refresh + fetch action. That keeps idle CPU at zero and avoids hidden git traffic while you are working. Point GitStatusBar at folders such as ~/Documents or ~/Projects . It finds local repositories and keeps the menu grouped around the places you actually work. Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…

  • Hey HN, Henry here from Cactus. We open-sourced Needle, a 26M parameter function-calling (tool use) model. It runs at 6000 tok/s prefill and 1200 tok/s decode on consumer devices. We were always frustrated by the little effort made towards building agentic models that run on budget phones, so we conducted investigations that led to an observation: agentic experiences are built upon tool calling, and massive models are overkill for it. Tool calling is fundamentally retrieval-and-assembly (match query to tool name, extract argument values, emit JSON), not reasoning. Cross-attention…
