Giving My First Pitch at 1M Cups Using a Custom Mobile App

I had a 6-minute pitch at 1 Million Cups and wanted more than a countdown timer. I wanted to see, at a glance, how my time was breaking down across slides as I presented. The app fills the screen with a dark-to-bright red gradient as time passes. Tapping advances slides, which steps the brightness up, creating visible bands. Wide band = you lingered. Thin band = you moved fast. If you go overtime, solid white fills from the top, overwriting your gradient. Live at https://preso.wetfish.net, source at https://github.com/wetfish/preso Built it for my own pitch, but…

What it does

How I built a presentation timer to pace my first live pitch, and walked out with connections to local manufacturers. Last week I gave my first live pitch for Andon Alert at 1 Million Cups in Fort Collins, Colorado. I walked out with connections to a local business accelerator, an introduction to a shared manufacturing facility full of exactly the kind of small manufacturers we're building for, and a presentation tool that other people are already using. The format at 1 Million Cups is strict: 6 minutes to present, then 15 minutes of Q&A. I had 11 slides to get through and wanted to see at a glance how well I was pacing myself. Most slide timer apps are barebones: they give you a countdown…from andonalert.net

Hi all! Thanks for checking out the side project my family and I have been working on (on and off) for the past year. We were playing wordle when we thought: wouldn't it be fun if you had to guess musical notes (ABCDEFG) instead of words? And what if the notes you had to guess were actually the first six notes of a familiar melody? My brother and I both have perfect pitch, which has been really helpful when we want to cover a song that we like, or improvise in a jazz or blue grass setting. We don’t promise that this game will help you gain perfect pitch, but it is possible to train your ear…

Hello, For quite some time, I've been unsatisfied with the built-in timers on both Android and iOS; especially for workouts, when I needed to set up a configurable number of series with rest periods in between. That's when I started thinking about building something myself. It was just a timer and I said to myself "how hard could it be?", I had no idea. The first iteration of the project worked "just fine", but the UI was an eyesore (even more than it is now), and the UX was quite awful as well. As you can probably guess, I'm not versed in design or front-end development. In fact, my last…

Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…

  • With social media and now AI, its important to keep the indie web alive. There are many people who write frequently. Blogosphere tries to highlight them by fetching the recent posts from personal blogs across many categories. There are two versions: Minimal (HN-inspired, fast, static): https://text.blogosphere.app/ Non-minimal: https://blogosphere.app/ If you don't find your blog (or your favorite ones), please add them.
