In plain words

gniP is a monitoring tool that works as a reverse ping alternative to services like Pingdom and Cronitor. Instead of external services pinging your system, gniP allows your system to ping outward, making it suitable for environments with restricted inbound access such as on-premises infrastructure or Kubernetes clusters. The tool is designed for developers, system administrators, and DevOps professionals who need straightforward monitoring capabilities without complex setup requirements.

From the sources

Pingdom/Cronitor free alternative (but the other way around and A LOT simpler, with A LOT more capabilities), suitable for developers, system admins, DevOps, and individuals with complex networking situations (think “onprem” or K8s clusters with no inbound).

    An ultra-light-weight tool to quickly test your ping2022 · ping.projects.chrisjeakle.com · ▲96

Howdy HN! I find myself testing my ping from time to time, especially when my internet seems wonky while WFH. It feels like there should be an easier way test my ping than puling up a terminal or a complex web app - especially when I'm on my phone or any other device that doesn't have a terminal. I figured I should be the change I wish to see in the world and created this super light ping test. I also created a latency monitoring solution (https://github.com/cjjeakle/network-monitor), feel free to clone and try it out! I know there are a lot more mature monitoring…

Peeng – like Pingdom, but the other way around and simpler2023 · peeng.sh · ▲84

Hey folks! Shahar and Tal from Keep (https://www.keephq.dev) here! For the last few weeks we’ve been building Peeng and can now share our beta with you: https://www.peeng.sh. Peeng is the easiest and quickest “heartbeat” architecture we could think of. Just pick a subdomain (e.g. x.peeng.sh), configure an interval, an endpoint, and a payload, and hit that subdomain every <X (interval) seconds — If you won’t, Peeng will send an HTTP POST request to your configured endpoint. It’s Pingdom/Cronitor/heartbeat.sh free alternative (but the other way around and A LOT…

Hi HN - I’m the developer of PingStalker, a macOS utility I built to see what’s really happening on the LAN/WLAN. I live in the CLI, but when it came to discovery and monitoring, I found it limiting. So I built a GUI that brings my favorite tools together in one place. PingStalker started because I wanted to know if something on the network was scanning my machine. I also wanted quick access to core details—external IP, Wi-Fi data, and local topology. Then I wanted more: fast, reliable scans using ARP tables and ICMP. As a Wi-Fi engineer, I couldn’t stop there. I kept adding ways to…

Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…

I saw this [0] pretty cool thread by user revskill, and wanted a quicker way to search through it, but also to keep them all in one place so I can read them at my leisure whenever I get time. Right now is like 60 lines of Ruby using Nokogiri, but I will certainly look into it further down the line and improve the list. There's a cronjob checking the thread every 12 hours but I will eventually shut that down and it will become static after that. There are some really awesome blogs in there. I really recommend going through the list, it made my day. [0] "Could you share your personal blog…
