Grid

Open-Source Private and Encrypted Location Sharing

Grid launched on June 25, 2025 with 9 votes, #3,023 of 7,999 launches that month and more than 50% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 1 year on.

What it does

Grid is an open source cross-platform encrypted location sharing app built in response to Big Tech & Gov exploiting user data. Designed to allow you to safely share locations with friends & family without compromise: simple, transparent, and actually private.

Grid is the leading end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) location sharing app. Share GPS location privately with military-grade E2EE encryption. Open source, self-hostable, zero tracking.

End-to-end encrypted, in real time. Sign up with a passkey, no phone number or email needed. Your phone encrypts your location before sending it. Nobody else can read it, including us. Grid renders maps with our own Protomaps tiles. Google and Apple never see where you’re looking. Pick who can see you and for how long. Turn it off whenever. We don’t sell anything to anyone. There are no ads and no third-party trackers in the app. Make as many groups as you want. There’s no premium tier and nothing is paywalled. The Grid app is fully open source. Read the code or fork it on GitHub. Grid uses the Matrix protocol for end-to-end encryption. The same protocol has been independently reviewed by…from mygrid.app

Hey HN! Pilots everywhere are required to keep a logbook of all their flying hours, aircraft, airports, and so on. Since I track everything digitally (some people still just use paper logbooks!), I put together some data visualizations and a few 3D globes to show my flying history. This globe is probably my favourite so far: https://jameshard.ing/pilot/globes/all If you’ve got ideas for other graphs or ways to show this kind of data, I’d love to hear them!

  • I was the main contributor to workout.lol, an open-source fitness app to easily build a workout routine. The project had traction (1.4k GitHub stars, 95 forks, ~20K visits/month), but was eventually sold due to video licensing hurdles. The new owner stopped maintaining it, and the repo went abandoned. Over the next 9 months, I sent 15 emails to try to save it : no replies. Feature requests & issues were ignored. The community was left with a "broken" tool let's say. I couldn't just let it die So I built the new version from scratch with the same open-source spirit, but a better…
