Hi HN, I'm Tony. I built Grov (https://grov.dev/) because I hit a wall with current AI coding assistants: they are "single-player." The moment I kill a terminal pane or close a chat session, the high-level reasoning and architectural decisions generated during that session are lost. I submitted this earlier but it didn’t get any traction. But it’s blowing up on Twitter, so I figured I would give it another shot here. The system is quick and easy to setup and works surprisingly well. And it’s not just a fun gimmick; it’s now a core part of my workflow.

I trained a 125M-parameter transformer to autocomplete piano performances in real time (~108 notes/sec on an iPhone 15). The idea is basically GitHub Copilot or Tabnine, except instead of prompting it with code, you prompt it by playing a few notes on a MIDI piano. The model then continues what you played, entirely on-device. The app is free if anyone wants to try it. Happy to answer questions about the model, training, Core ML, or the many things that didn't work.
