Just pick up the phone. No app. No internet. No passwords.

What it does

HAI is a voice-first AI companion you reach by calling any regular phone number - no smartphone, no Wi-Fi, no setup. You speak naturally. HAI listens, remembers your appointments, keeps track of names and numbers, and picks up where you left off last time. Built for older adults living independently, rural communities with no broadband, and anyone who finds tech more stressful than helpful. No screens. Just a conversation.

Companies use AI to take your calls. I built AI to make them for you2025 · pipervoice.com · ▲237

We're living in this weird asymmetry where companies use AI to talk to us, but we're still manually dialing them. Companies everywhere are adopting AI voice agents lately. Big retail, family dentist clinics, local pharmacy. This year, I've been in a few calls where it's super natural sounding AI, which has been pretty cool to experience. But then it got me thinking - why are we, the consumers, still the ones making calls if they're using robots for theirs? So I built Piper: basically AI that makes phone calls for you. You tell it what you need (book appointment, check on an order, dispute…

  • I trained a 125M-parameter transformer to autocomplete piano performances in real time (~108 notes/sec on an iPhone 15). The idea is basically GitHub Copilot or Tabnine, except instead of prompting it with code, you prompt it by playing a few notes on a MIDI piano. The model then continues what you played, entirely on-device. The app is free if anyone wants to try it. Happy to answer questions about the model, training, Core ML, or the many things that didn't work.

  • Hey HN, Henry from Cactus here! We previously released Cactus Needle, a 14MB agentic LLM for tool call, device use, and structured extraction for phones, wearables, smart homes, small robots and microcontrollers. We got really great feedback here, and have now incorporated the suggestions to release Needle 2. The whole model is a single 14MB binary that runs a full session in 28MB of RAM; 45m parameters at 2bit compression. Needle hits 500 tokens/sec decode speed on a Raspberry Pi 5, sits between 400-1,500 tokens/sec on VR devices like Meta Quest 3S and Apple Vision Pro, and ranges…
