HN stories categorized by topics of interest

Hi HN, TL;DR: I made a website that takes all the top stories on HN and categorizes them into one of ten topics of interest using LangChain and GPT-4. I've always liked the idea of getting a personal mix of news tailored to my interests. Hacker News is pretty close to that ideal, which is reflected in the time I spend on here every day. It's a great mix, but playing with LangChain, I got the idea for a weekend project. Roughly speaking most posts on HN fall into one of these categories: * Programming, Software & Computer Science * AI, Data Science & Analytics * Business & Entrepreneurship *…

In plain words

This website automatically categorizes top Hacker News stories into ten topic areas—including programming, AI, business, science, cybersecurity, design, finance, career development, media, and general interests—using LangChain and GPT-4. It helps users quickly find news aligned with their interests rather than browsing the full feed. The tool is designed for Hacker News readers who want a personalized view of trending stories organized by subject matter.

In the maker’s words, at launch

Hi HN, TL;DR: I made a website that takes all the top stories on HN and categorizes them into one of ten topics of interest using LangChain and GPT-4. I've always liked the idea of getting a personal mix of news tailored to my interests. Hacker News is pretty close to that ideal, which is reflected in the time I spend on here every day. It's a great mix, but playing with LangChain, I got the idea for a weekend project. Roughly speaking most posts on HN fall into one of these categories: * Programming, Software & Computer Science * AI, Data Science & Analytics * Business & Entrepreneurship * Science & Research * Cybersecurity & Digital Safety * Design, User Experience & Creativity * Finance & Economics in Tech * Work Culture & Career Development * Media, Content & Communication * General & Diverse Interests Using langchain with GPT-4 Turbo (JSON mode), I sort every top submission into one of the above. Costs for using the API are currently at 15$ a month, with few optimizations. For ease of use I also added the possibility to consume the news topics via a responsive webpage, RSS and email digest (daily, weekly, monthly).

    I was tired of opening 2 tabs for every HN link, so I made a userscriptJul 2026 · github.com · ▲433

HN is great for the links people share, but a big part of the value I get comes from reading the discussion around them. I realized I was always opening the article in one tab and the comments in another, constantly switching back and forth. I figured there was probably a simpler way, so I threw together this userscript to merge the two. 1. Clicking a link from Hacker News opens the article with a side panel containing the discussion. It doesn't require your credentials, is resizable, and is easy to tweak if you want to customize it. 2. If you land on an article that has previously been…

Our weekend project - HN Showcase, browse "Show HN" posts2011 · ▲63

http://www.hnshowcase.com Moses (nnythm) and I browse Hacker News daily. Show HN posts are some of our favorite parts of HN. We wanted to create a way to browse Show HN articles, even those that might not quite make it to the front page. We created http://www.hnshowcase.com last weekend to make discovering projects posted on HN easier. It searches all "Show HN" posts and generates a thumbnail view for each of them. You can sort by submission date, points, and number of comments, and navigate with left/right or j/k keys. We used the following technologies: HN Search API, Pyramid web…

  • I trained a 125M-parameter transformer to autocomplete piano performances in real time (~108 notes/sec on an iPhone 15). The idea is basically GitHub Copilot or Tabnine, except instead of prompting it with code, you prompt it by playing a few notes on a MIDI piano. The model then continues what you played, entirely on-device. The app is free if anyone wants to try it. Happy to answer questions about the model, training, Core ML, or the many things that didn't work.

  • Hey HN, Henry from Cactus here! We previously released Cactus Needle, a 14MB agentic LLM for tool call, device use, and structured extraction for phones, wearables, smart homes, small robots and microcontrollers. We got really great feedback here, and have now incorporated the suggestions to release Needle 2. The whole model is a single 14MB binary that runs a full session in 28MB of RAM; 45m parameters at 2bit compression. Needle hits 500 tokens/sec decode speed on a Raspberry Pi 5, sits between 400-1,500 tokens/sec on VR devices like Meta Quest 3S and Apple Vision Pro, and ranges…
