How I dealt with someone trying to build a copy my business

Someone posted an ad on Craigslist offering to pay $750 to build a copy of my company, Review Trackers. I noticed the ad within a few hours of it being posted and decided to redirect the traffic (since they linked to us in the posting) to our Rails developer job posting with a little note.

Hey HN, I'm Ben, the founder of DownloadPage Let me share a quick story... I used to sell a digital product through Lemon Squeezy. It was full of bugs, the fees were high, and payouts were slow. When I switched to Stripe, I started saving money and got paid faster. The only problem? Selling directly meant stitching together a bunch of tools just to deliver a file. So I built DownloadPage to make it simple. You connect Stripe, upload your product, and share a link. That's it. If you're tired of giving up a cut to your payment processor, this is for you! Let me know what you think. P.S. I'll…

Hi HN! I built DemoSlice after getting frustrated with enterprise demo tools that cost $20k-$50k/year. Most teams only use 40% of their features anyway. DemoSlice does one thing: turn screenshots into clickable product tours. No complex HTML capture, no training required, no expensive contracts. How it works: 1. Upload screenshots 2. Add clickable hotspots 3. Annotate with text bubbles 4. Share a public link Pricing is simple: Free plan (1 demo with watermark) or Pro at $19/month (unlimited, no watermark). Currently validating demand with a working prototype. Would love to hear…

Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…
