I have a confession to make – in all honesty, I’m not much of a hardware hacker. In my teens, whenever I got home from school, I gravitated more often to coding (or video games) than soldering or robotics. But I spent a lot of my childhood playing with Snap Circuits and redstone circuits in Minecraft, so I can appreciate the charm. You’re automating things - taking small atoms and combining them into something bigger. Just like code can be written to do whatever you want, so can hardware – and there’s something more visceral to it since your creations takes up space in the real world. I dig that. In an effort to challenge myself (and have a bit of fun), I recently picked up an Arduino , and…from rybicki.io

An implementation of a dynamic programming language in Rust. Includes: Parser/Compiler, REPL, Virtual Machine, Bytecode Disassembler This started out as a learning project to teach myself Rust. It has grown into a decently substantial piece of software and I've learned quite a bit in the process! Some neat things: + A garbage collector that can store dynamically sized types without any double-indirection (i.e. I have my own Box implementation with manual alloc/dealloc) + The smart pointer used to reference GCed data is a thin pointer. The ptr metadata needed for DSTs is stored in…

I’m sure many of you are familiar, but there’s a treacherous gap between finding (or building) a model that works in PyTorch, and getting that deployed into your application, especially in consumer-facing applications. I’ve been very interested in solving this problem with a great developer experience. Over time, I gradually realized that the highest-impact thing to have was a way to go from existing Python code to a self-contained native binary—in other words, a Python compiler. I was already pretty familiar with a successful attempt: when Apple introduced armv8 on the iPhone 5s, they…

Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…
