I made a app that uses NFC as a physical switch to block distractions

Hi HN! Super proud to showcase Foqos! I wanted to create a way to physically block apps on my phone, always had a bunch of NFC tags, combined the 2 together over the holiday break and Foqos was born. You can create profiles, write them to NFC tags and track your weekly focus. Its completely open source and will always be free! There is an affiliate link in the app for nfc tags and donations are completely optional Link here: https://apps.apple.com/ca/app/foqos/id6736793117

In plain words

Foqos is an open-source iOS app that uses NFC tags as physical switches to block distracting apps on smartphones. Users create focus profiles and write them to NFC tags, then tap a tag to activate app restrictions. The app tracks weekly focus metrics to help users monitor their progress. It is free to use, with optional donations and an affiliate link for purchasing NFC tags.

From the sources

We listened to so much feedback and improved and re-designed the full app. Foqos is a free an and open source way to block apps and websites behind the tap of NFC tag or QR code. Its an alternative to Brick, Unpluq and more!

Free, open-source iPhone app blocker with NFC, QR, timers, and smart breaks. No subscriptions or tracking—your focus data stays on your iPhone and is never sold.

A free, privacy-first, open-source alternative to Brick, Opal, ScreenZen, Unpluq, Blok, and more. Foqos is currently made for iPhone. If you use Android, these independent apps may offer a similar way to put more friction between you and distracting apps. Foqos is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by Switchly or Lock. Their features, pricing, availability, and privacy practices are managed by their respective creators. Start or end a session with a physical tag placed away from your phone. Print a code or keep one somewhere that makes distraction inconvenient. Take intentional, timed pauses without ending your whole session. Use Apple Screen Time APIs to block the distractions…from foqos.app

my phone secretly robbed all my dreams and i didn’t even knew it got so bad. when i saw my screen time being about 11hrs with ~95 phone pickups per day, i realized how bad it got. my problem is that i could not avoid social media entirely as i post actively because i’m involved in marketing and branding. I tried the usual, app blockers & time limits, but i always find myself hitting “one more minute” like a junkie. i’m not looking for a complete social media absence or deleting everything as these radical solutions don’t fit my lifestyle and needs and i tend to come back needing even more.…

Hey HN, I'm a solo developer from Nigeria. I built Quran Unlock - an app that blocks distracting apps (TikTok, Instagram, etc.) until you complete your daily Quran reading. The idea came from my own struggle with phone addiction. I wanted to read Quran daily but kept getting distracted. So I built this for myself, then shared it. Some stats after 2 months: - 123K+ users - 64.9% returning user rate - 31M events tracked Tech stack: - React Native - Firebase (Auth, Firestore, Analytics, Cloud Messaging) - RevenueCat for subscriptions - iOS Screen Time API + Android UsageStats App Store:…

I've been building Focu, a mindful productivity app for macOS, these past months. As someone diagnosed with ADHD and depression, it's been super helpful to journal daily and use an AI to reflect and get feedback. It's not a replacement for therapy, but it sure has been complementary. The app uses Ollama to provide the user with a locally running AI, the downside is that it does require a powerful device, but I've had super good results with Llama3.2:3b which is not too heavy to run at all. I'm using Dexie.js to store the data in IndexedDB although I'm considering moving to "file over app".…

Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…

I realized that the PDF engines of modern desktop browsers (PDFium and PDF.js) support JavaScript with enough I/O primitives to make a basic game like Tetris. It was a bit tricky to find a union of features that work in both engines, but in the end it turns out that showing/hiding annotation "fields" works well to make monochrome pixels, and keyboard input can be achieved by typing in a text input box. All in all it's quite janky but a nice reminder of how general purpose PDF scripting can be. The linked PDF is all ASCII so you can just open it in a text editor, or have a look at…

I originally built this app to organize and reuse interesting React + Tailwind components I came across on Twitter, inspired by the shadcn/ui approach. Later, a friend started contributing their own components, and it got me thinking—this could grow into something bigger, like an NPM for design engineers to share and use components. Would love to hear your thoughts!
