ISS Detector app

The International Space Station, visible with the naked eye!

ISS Detector app launched on September 20, 2017 with 5 votes, #1,471 of 3,072 launches that month. The site was still online in September 2026, 9 years on.

What it does

Have you seen the International Space Station? It is visible with the naked eye! ISS Detector will tell you when and where to look for the ISS. You get an alarm a few minutes before a pass and the app provides an Augmented Reality view which helps you spot the station. The Chinese space stations Tiangong 1 and Tiangong 2 are also tracked.

Download ISS Detector by Derk Vrijdag on the App Store. See screenshots, ratings and reviews, user tips, and more apps like ISS Detector.

Free · In‑App Purchases · Designed for iPad. Not verified for macOS. Filters are great to get a list of just what an amateur radio operator would want. Or for an ISS observer only interested in high striking passes. Or filter on the low to zero elevation passes if you like. Another source, or past experience, is needed to know which AMSATs are actually active. Lots of them are still on orbit but long since inactive. Once an Active list is made, a manageable list is produced. What is really nice is just the information an Amateur needs for field work. Details on the pass, ground track map, and the Modes, Uplink and Downlink frequencies come up with one click on the satellite of interest. More…from apps.apple.com

This is a little hobby project that I hope you enjoy. You can see where the International Space Station is now, with live HD video from NASA, on a realistic 3D globe. The positions of the sun and moon are also accurate, though distances aren't to scale. The clouds are also near-realtime; I span that out into a separate project at https://clouds.matteason.co.uk, where the cloud images I create from EUMETSAT data are freely available. I've got more features almost ready to go, like the ability to turn off all UI, toggleable clouds and turning off the day/night cycle I'd love for…
