Kubernetes on AWS with Kops For Less Than $1/day
AWS Kubernetes is expensive to run by default. This entire blog is running on AWS Kubernetes via kops for just $1/day. Read the step-by-step instructions.

What it does
The more you’re willing to self-manage your cloud software , the cheaper the costs will be. These days, it’s actually relatively easy to use tools like Docker and Kubernetes to deploy stable infrastructure. I even use Docker and Kubernetes at home on “spellbook” Raspberry Pis for home-automation purposes. In this post, I’ll show that the same basic tools can be used to manage an AWS Kubernetes deployment for extremely cheap. This blog is, in fact, served by the AWS-hosted Kubernetes cluster that is my “production environment.” It serves as the case-study of this post. It uses my open-source Switchboard projects to route traffic for many WordPress…from technicallywizardry.com

Canine – A Heroku alternative built on Kubernetes2025 · github.com · ▲320Hello HN! I've been working on Canine for about a year now. It started when I was sick of paying the overhead of using stuff like Heroku, Render, Fly, etc to host some web apps that I've built. At one point I was paying over $400 a month for hosting these in the cloud. Last year I moved all my stuff to Hetzner. For a 4GB machine, the cost of various providers: Heroku = $260 Fly.io = $65 Render = $85 Hetzner = $4 (This problem gets a lot worse when you need > 4GB) The only downside of using Hetzner is that there isn’t a super straightforward way to do stuff like: - DNS management / SSL…
Edka – Kubernetes clusters on your own Hetzner account2025 · edka.io · ▲437Hi HN, I’ve been working with Kubernetes for over a decade, since the alpha days, and was involved in kube-aws project before AWS launched EKS. For the past four years, I’ve been helping friends and small businesses cut costs by running Kubernetes on Hetzner Cloud, which I’ve found to be rock solid and by far the best priced provider. Provisioning a cluster on Hetzner is now straightforward, thanks to tools like k3s and hetzner-k3s, but configuring it for your specific needs still takes time and expertise. I built Edka to make that part easy: spin up a production ready cluster in ~2 minutes,…
We built a managed Kubernetes provider at half the cost of AWS2023 · symbiosis.host · ▲25Since there’s a few discussions recently on $4 VPSes we thought you might be interested in Symbiosis, a cheaper and simpler managed k8s provider. Supported features include external LBs, encrypted+replicated storage and autoscaler. Infrastructure can be managed with UI, CLI, Terraform or Pulumi. Control planes are free of charge and a 1vCPU/2GB node goes for $6 per month. We’re live in Germany right now and we’re expanding into US during 2023. Feel free to try it out and leave a comment.

Talanoa▲346Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…

Hey folks. Last year I was fortunate enough to sign a deal to write a book with my favorite technical publisher, The Pragmatic Bookshelf. When I started out as an Engineering Manager many years ago, I found that there wasn't a huge amount of material that specifically and practically helped me understand how to do my job. When you learn to program there's all of these amazing tutorials, examples and guides, but what was there for new managers? In response to this, a couple of years ago I started a blog over at https://www.theengineeringmanager.com which got a decent amount of…
