In plain words

Liquid Guilloché is a blog by Max Irwin exploring animated guilloché patterns created with HTML5 canvas. The site demonstrates how mathematical formulas using trigonometry can generate intricate, flowing visual designs. It's aimed at people interested in generative art, mathematics, and web graphics who want to understand the elegant simplicity behind these beautiful geometric patterns.

From the sources

Having recently read a blog post on guilloches[1], I became intrigued and the post inspired me to recreate them. They are beautiful patterns, and the starting formula to draw a rosette looked very simple to replicate in an HTML5 canvas. The 30 minute project quickly took off into a several hour excursion into the beauty of animated guilloches. The formula for the basic rosette guilloche is not something you would stumble upon when playing around with graphics. It is elegant and simple, and if you have a basic understanding of graphing trigonometry equations you can grasp it without difficulty. In the physical world, a layperson would recognise it as a spirograph[2]. Math .tau = Math .tau||(…from max.io

I went down the rabbit hole on a side project and ended up building this: Strange Attractors(https://blog.shashanktomar.com/posts/strange-attractors). It’s built with three.js. Working on it reminded me of the little "maths for fun" exercises I used to do while learning programming in early days. Just trying things out, getting fascinated and geeky, and being surprised by the results. I spent way too much time on this, but it was extreme fun. My favorite part: someone pointed me to the Simone Attractor on Threads. It is a 2D attractor and I asked GPT to extrapolate it to…

Hello HN! We’re a small creative studio specializing in real-time 3D experiences. Netlify approached us to design and build an interactive experience to celebrate reaching 5 million developers. Inspired by the classic game Marble Madness, we created a gamified experience where users control a ball through playful, interactive levels. The goal was to blend marketing content with the look and feel of a game to engage users. The app is built with Three.js [1], using our custom render pipeline and shaders, and uses Rapier for physics simulation [2]. The 2D content is overlaid on the WebGL view…

Paper is a new design tool. We launched into open alpha today. Anyone can now sign up and use Paper. We started Paper about 1 year ago with the goal to bring more creativity back into design tools. It feels like the existing options are becoming increasingly corporate. To celebrate to launch, we published a new shader that lets anyone see their logo in Apple's new heat map animation style. There is no sign-up needed at heat.paper.design. We're always looking for feedback from anyone who uses Sketch, Figma, Photoshop, or Illustrator, about what they most need in their professional design…
