Make VS Code Awesome

Make VS Code focused and beautiful. Be fast as hell in it.

Make VS Code Awesome launched on August 11, 2020 with 6 votes, #1,307 of 3,833 launches that month and more than 50% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 6 years on.

What it does

VS Code is noisy. It's loaded with distracting wiz-bangs and doo-dads. "Make VS Code Awesome" is a course I wrote dedicated to bringing focus and speed to the development experience.

Make VS Code beautiful. Be productive as hell in it.

Its integrated terminal, global search, and extension marketplace are fantastic. But here's my beef: It's loaded with distractions and takes a ton of configuration to feel good. We're going to make VS Code awesome, then teach you how to be insanely productive in it. This is not about everything VS Code CAN do, that's what the docs are for. Instead of showing you everything VS Code is capable of , we'll zoom in on the things that matter to a working developer. Hi, I'm Caleb. I'm a full-time open source developer (creator of Alpine and Livewire ). I've been using VS Code for years. Over time, I've tinkered and tweaked my workflow to be fast, efficient, and beautiful. I get tons of questions…from makevscodeawesome.com

Hey show HN! This course came about as a result of wanting a more targeted way of practicing using new vim commands I wanted to pick up, rather than just trying to use them in my regular code editing sessions. When I would try to use new commands during code editing, my productivity took a hit because I was trying to do two different things at once: thinking about code vs practicing my muscle memory. So, I made a separate environment for practicing, one that had an interactive editor, progress tracking, and achievement goals to let me see which areas I should work on, like speed and…

Hey HN. We're Mus and Isaac - creators of LightLayer. We've been outputting a ton more code since using agentic dev tools. It's been great. But we're starting to see a new bottleneck emerge that's no longer writing the actual code: reviewing code. We’d love to hear from folks here if they’re feeling the inertia of code reviews a lot more these days with the surge in development velocity. For us, it was the reason we decided to pivot what we were working on before, and go full-time on building a workspace aimed at bringing the code review experience up to speed for the AI era. To be clear:…

Hi HN, I’m a fullstack developer, and honestly, I’ve lost count of how many side projects I’ve worked on over the years. But one idea kept coming back to me: a different kind of email client. It first came to me in 2014: “What if we could handle emails more like conversations?” Every year, I’d revisit this concept in my “Build Notes.” Ten years later, no one had built exactly what I had in mind — so I finally decided to do it myself. That’s how Talanoa was born. I wanted something focused on people, not timelines. I was tired of marking messages as unread just to remember to reply later, or…
