In plain words
Mapname is a free, ad-free social network for tagging and organizing points of interest with custom names using a prefix-ID-suffix format. Users create a unique prefix during signup, then name locations and group them into collections, such as favorite coffee shops or cities visited. The platform functions anonymously, connecting users around shared interests in places rather than personal identities, and allows discovery and discussion of these named locations with like-minded users.

Personal Images are not promoted. Here is one minute user guide https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G42THV9YcY4 More mapnames are on twitter https://twitter.com/NameYourWay You can consider this as "Pinterest of coordinates" Another way to think this; mapname(s) to coordinate(s) is similar to domain name(s) to ip address(es). Instead of hard to remember IP Addresses we use domain names. Similarly instead of coordinates or map list urls a mapname can be in use. Between mapname and a coordinate 1->1 or N->1 or 1->N relationships are possible. Whenever a mapname visited, the most relevant what3words attached to it so that you may communicate whichever is more relevant. Mapname is trying to reduce friction while describing addresses and organising points of interests, for transportation, navigation, directions uses integrations. A mapname can be viewed in your favourite maps (Google Maps, Apple Maps, Yandex Maps, Bing Maps, Baidu Maps) or with what3words, citymapper, waze. it is available on android & ios, feel free play with it, any feedback or question is appreciated. What other location/navigation/map integration would you benefit?

The idea is simple: click any place on the map, propose a name, others vote, or it will be auto-accepted in ~5min. No account needed for fresh locations or name duel - only to challenge already-renamed places or vote to prevent abuse. 40k renames so far, and surprisingly people mostly behave. Some names are genuinely creative and I keep learning random geography facts just by watching the map (did you know someone mapped every single animal in a Taiwan Kaohsiung zoo on OpenStreetMap?) Non-commercial, just a side project. Stack is SvelteKit, MapLibre, 40GB vector map self-hosted on Cloudflare…

Hi HN, I built Eigendrum, a web tool that solves the 2D wave equation for arbitrary shapes so you can hear what they sound like as drums. How it works: * Solves -∇²u = λu using finite element analysis (Kφ = λMφ) on a triangle mesh. * Validated to <0.1% error against closed-form solutions for circles (Bessel zeros) and rectangles. * Sound model factors in strike location, Rayleigh damping, and mallet width. * Includes Kac drums I & II to demonstrate identical sound spectra from different geometries. * No frameworks, build steps, or dependencies. Repo and tests:…
