MeditationLock: Pause Before You Scroll

What it does

Most screen-time apps try to block distractions. MeditationLock interrupts them. Before opening apps like TikTok, Instagram, or Reddit, you’ll complete a 1 minute reset designed to break autopilot and give you a moment to decide. Built for people who want more control over their attention without deleting social media.

MeditationLock blocks distracting apps and forces a 1-minute pause before you can open them. Available for iPhone.

MeditationLock requires a 1-minute guided reflection before Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Reddit, and other distracting apps open. Some of the world's smartest engineers are paid to keep you scrolling. It's not your fault. These apps train your brain to seek quick dopamine hits. A brief reset breaks the automatic urge and calms your nervous system. You choose what to do, not the algorithm. This retrains your brain over time. Most apps give you long sessions you never start. MeditationLock interrupts you with something too simple tofrom meditationlock.app

Hi HN, I built ScreenBreak after realizing that most app blockers failed in practice. “Hard blocks” were too rigid — I either locked myself out entirely or tapped Ignore Limit and kept scrolling. There was no useful middle state. In reality, people still need to open apps like TikTok or Instagram for specific tasks: looking something up, replying to someone, checking updates, etc. The problem isn’t intentional use; it’s the unplanned, unconscious scrolling that follows. I wanted a system that interrupts the impulse without fully preventing access. ScreenBreak uses soft blocking plus…

  Homebrew 6.0.0▲1,481

Today, I’m proud to announce Homebrew 6.0.0. The most significant changes since 5.1.0 are a new tap trust security mechanism, the new faster, smaller, default internal Homebrew JSON API, sandboxing on Linux, better defaults informed by our user survey, many brew bundle improvements, improved performance and initial support for macOS 27 (Golden Gate). Happy to discuss any questions here!

Hi HN! I was super frustrated at apps like tiktok and wechat preventing me from saving or downloading the animated gifs, so I made a little tool to turn a screen recording into a slack-sized emoji. Hope you get some value from this!
