Multi-Cluster and Multi-Cloud Service Meshes with CNCF's Kuma and Envoy

Learn how to create a multi-cluster and multi-cloud service mesh with CNCF's Kuma and Envoy in a few steps with the new multi-zone feature.

In plain words

Kuma is a service mesh platform built on Envoy that enables organizations to manage and secure services across multiple clusters and cloud environments. Designed for platform engineers and DevOps teams, it provides traffic management, security policies, and observability for containerized applications. The platform simplifies the complexity of connecting services distributed across different infrastructure, making it easier to enforce consistent networking rules and monitoring across diverse deployment scenarios.

When we first created [ Kuma ] ( https://kuma.io ) Kuma - which means " * bear" * in Japanese - we dreamed of creating a service mesh that could run across every cluster, every cloud and every application. These are all requirements that large organizations must implement to support their application teams across a wide variety of architectures and platforms: VMs, Kubernetes, AWS, GCP and so on. With Kuma - now a CNCF project and at the time of this writing, the only Envoy-based service mesh donated and accepted by the foundation - we have relentlessly executed on this vision with the community. Starting from Kuma 0.6, which was released this summer with a new advanced multi-zone…from konghq.com

Zero dependencies. No external databases. Single binary. Just deploy and go. I needed something that would allow for real-time monitoring, and installation is as simple as dropping a single file and running it. That's exactly what Kula is. Kula is the Polish word for "ball," as in "crystal ball." The project is in constant development, but I'm already using it on multiple servers in production. It still has some rough edges and needs to mature, but I wanted to share it with the world now—perhaps someone else will find it useful and be willing to help me develop it by testing or providing…

A large part of our (Real Kinetic's) business is helping organizations implement platform engineering, but we've found the existing tooling to be lacking. For IaC, Terraform state becomes a pain because TF treats infrastructure as "one-shot" commands. The Kubernetes controller model provides a nicer approach to managing infrastructure, but the tooling here is also lacking. For configuration management, Helm just doesn't really scale with complexity, nor does Kustomize. For resource orchestration, Crossplane is a step in the right direction but still has challenges and limitations. As a…

Almost eight years ago I launched an online “Linux sysadmin course for newbies” here at HN. It was a side-project that went well, but never generated enough money to allow me to fully commit to leaving the Day Job. After surviving the Big C, and getting made redundant I thought I might improve and relaunch it commercially – but my doctors are a pessimistic bunch, so it looked like I didn’t have the time. Instead, I rejigged/relaunched it via a Reddit forum this February as free and open - and have now gathered a team of helpers to ensure that it keeps going each month even after I can’t…
