My solar-powered, ePaper digital photo frame
This is version 2 of my ongoing heirloom device project, a digital photo frame built with the goal of lasting longer than your typical gadget. There's a part of me that wishes to commercialize a polished version of this product, but the more I speak to people, the more I become convinced that I belong to a very small minority.

In plain words
My solar-powered, ePaper digital photo frame is a digital photo display powered by solar energy with an ePaper screen, designed to function as a long-lasting device intended to serve as a family heirloom. The frame is built for people seeking durable electronics that can be passed down through generations rather than replaced frequently. What distinguishes this project is its focus on longevity and sustainability through solar power and ePaper technology, representing an alternative approach to typical consumer electronics.

After a few hundred load/unload cycles, it went bust — as I expected. There are many projects and even commercial products out there using a larger li-ion battery than the one I used for my v1, some of which promise up to two refreshes a day, for an entire year, before needing to recharge the battery. Many people would think that it’s perfectly acceptable for an object that for 99.9% of its life will just hang…from jamez.it

Looks like this year ePaper projects have been popping around[1], so this is mine. I made a photo frame with the intention of having a record of my family's history that can potentially outlive me. Knowing the challenges of long-lived digital projects, I consider this a moving target that will go through several iterations, but the first version showed encouraging results. I wonder if anyone else is interested in having something like that in their living rooms. More details:…
