My weekend project - Chessboard picture recognition launched on August 5, 2011 with 51 votes, #29 of 248 launches that month and more than 90% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 15 years on.
In plain words
This is a chess piece recognition project that uses image processing to identify chess pieces from photographs of a chessboard. The tool is designed for chess players who want to digitize physical games. It addresses the technical challenge of recognizing pieces from various angles and lighting conditions, with discussion around implementing neural networks for improved accuracy and preprocessing techniques to handle spatial distortion.

Awesome! Congrats, this is a great first step!! The piece recognition seems to be complex indeed. How about some kind of neural network that you could feed many chess pieces pictures for the training, then use to recognize? Not sure if that would work ... or what folks are doing to solve this kind of issues nowadays, but that's what comes to mind from my CS background anyway :). You may need to pre-process the image before the neural network recognition though, since the angle makes things even more complex... can you guess the spatial / angle issue from the lines info? The chess rules also can help you (i.e. you can use them in combination with the neural network... you know there's no…from codebazaar.blogspot.com

We built ChessBoss at the TechCrunch Disrupt hackathon this week. It didn’t make the top 10 but I thought Hacker News might think it’s pretty cool. https://devpost.com/software/chess-boss There are these really cool smart chessboards that can suggest moves and track your games... but they’re $400 and weigh 19 pounds. And of course there are apps that can analyze games but tracking and inputting games by hand is a huge pain. Or fully-digital chess apps... but board games are way more fun in real life! We wondered: “why can’t you just do that in software and bring the best…

I've been a longtime member @ HN, but I haven't been a developer. In fact, my only HN submission has been one asking how to learn to code (http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=820741). My cofounder and I decided to solve the problem by making a simple, interactive way to get started with Codecademy. We'd love your feedback. If you're interested in helping us to get more courses up (on any topic!), please send us an email at [email protected].
