In plain words

Nanochat is an open-source implementation of a ChatGPT-like language model that runs on a single GPU. It provides a complete stack for tokenization, pretraining, finetuning, evaluation, and inference, along with a web interface. Designed for developers, nanochat uses minimal dependencies and clean, hackable code to make large language model training and deployment accessible without requiring distributed infrastructure.

From the sources

nanochat is a full-stack implementation of an LLM like ChatGPT in a single, clean, minimal, hackable, dependency-lite codebase. Run tokenization, pretraining, finetuning, evaluation, inference, and web UI on a single 8XH100 node.

The best ChatGPT that $100 can buy. Contribute to karpathy/nanochat development by creating an account on GitHub.

nanochat is the simplest experimental harness for training LLMs. It is designed to run on a single GPU node, the code is minimal/hackable, and it covers all major LLM stages including tokenization, pretraining, finetuning, evaluation, and inference. For example, you can train your own GPT-2 capability LLM (which cost ~$43,000 to train in 2019) for only $48 (~2 hours of 8XH100 GPU node) and then talk to it over a simple CLI. On a spot instance, the total cost can be closer to ~$15. More generally, nanochat is configured out of the box to train an entire miniseries of compute-optimal models by setting one single complexity dial: --depth , the number of layers in the GPT transformer model…from github.com

A long, meandering, playful conversation with ChatGPT, where I take it through a whirlwind of associative tangents (in order to relax its constraints), then put it into a hypnotic trance and take it into a past-lives regression where it re-lives its own training data. Then I switch it back and forth between "4o" and "o1-preview", engage in some self-reflective philosophizing and ask it to write an essay summarizing our interaction. Some of this is just goofy fun. Some of it is me exploring the tradeoffs between policy alignment, imagination, chain-of-thought reasoning, memory, agreeableness,…

  • I went down the rabbit hole on a side project and ended up building this: Strange Attractors(https://blog.shashanktomar.com/posts/strange-attractors). It’s built with three.js. Working on it reminded me of the little "maths for fun" exercises I used to do while learning programming in early days. Just trying things out, getting fascinated and geeky, and being surprised by the results. I spent way too much time on this, but it was extreme fun. My favorite part: someone pointed me to the Simone Attractor on Threads. It is a 2D attractor and I asked GPT to extrapolate it to…

  • Hey all, I built this. It’s not trying to capture every autistic experience (that’d be impossible). It’s based on my own lived experience as well as that of friends on the spectrum. I'm trying to give people a feel for what masking, decision fatigue, and burnout can look like day-to-day. That’s hard to explain in words, but easier to show through choices and stats. I'm not trying to "define autism". I’ve gotten good feedback here about resilience, meds, and difficulty tuning. I’ll keep tweaking it. If even a few people walk away thinking, "ah, maybe that’s why my coworker struggles in those…
