notclass
I've been working on this for a few days now. The goal is to create a library of the best free educational content available and to build personalised learning paths for each user, using only free resources and at no cost to the user. Let me know what you think.
notclass launched on June 7, 2025 with 234 votes, #138 of 7,999 launches that month and more than 95% of that year's launches. The site was still online in September 2026, 1 year on.
What it does
Access curated learning paths built from the best online resources. Learn anything you want with simple step-by-step guides, track your progress, and join an active community of learners.
A framework for redesigning education in the 21st century. A notclass essay about learning, knowledge, constraints, construction, and education.
8,435 words on what learning is, why instruction can conceal it, and what education should optimize instead. AI was used to shape the format and write portions of the prose. None of the ideas, thinking, or conclusions were generated by AI; they are entirely the author's. Isn't it rather amusing how uncontroversial and common claiming that "education is wrong and inefficient" has become? Still... isn't it a big concern when people scream from the top of their lungs about a certain problem, yet nothing gets fixed? After all, it's absurd and pessimistic to think that societal problems aren't solvable, it might be just that we don't have the right knowledge to solve them yet... But how can it…from notclass.com

Hello HN, Over the last 12 months, I have been building https://learnawesome.org This idea came from Danny Hillis' 2012 talk at OSCON, which itself was inspired from Neal Stepehenson's _The Diamond Age : A Young Lady's Illustrated Primer_ The dream is to build a tool that matches the right learning material to the right student at the right time. Wikipedia is great, but it doesn't do a good job of leveraging the rich variety of learning resources that exist on the Web. Same applies to GoodReads - which is focused only on books, whereas these days we actually learn from videos,…

Hey HN! Pilots everywhere are required to keep a logbook of all their flying hours, aircraft, airports, and so on. Since I track everything digitally (some people still just use paper logbooks!), I put together some data visualizations and a few 3D globes to show my flying history. This globe is probably my favourite so far: https://jameshard.ing/pilot/globes/all If you’ve got ideas for other graphs or ways to show this kind of data, I’d love to hear them!

I was the main contributor to workout.lol, an open-source fitness app to easily build a workout routine. The project had traction (1.4k GitHub stars, 95 forks, ~20K visits/month), but was eventually sold due to video licensing hurdles. The new owner stopped maintaining it, and the repo went abandoned. Over the next 9 months, I sent 15 emails to try to save it : no replies. Feature requests & issues were ignored. The community was left with a "broken" tool let's say. I couldn't just let it die So I built the new version from scratch with the same open-source spirit, but a better…
